Should John Terry continue as England captain?

Well Andy Murray didn’t win but he really didn’t need to apologise for not winning when half the country wanted him to lose anyway! And if it makes him feel any better, I am sure his mum reassured him that he did lose to possibly the world’s greatest ever tennis player, playing on top form, so fair enough. Maybe next time………I enjoyed watching the match twice. Once in the morning, which was very stressful and once in the evening just to enjoy the tennis, particularly the third set. The tennis was exquisite but Murray’s inability to convert five set points was no less frustrating the second time round. But I really felt for him when he cried.

Fortunately for Murray, there hasn’t been too much in the press, which has been dominated by one big sporting story for days: should John Terry keep his job as England football captain? Life really is just like one big soap opera in the UK and we are all in the Big Brother house. Everyone has an opinion about everything, including the sex lives of sports stars. England’s chances at the World Cup are now somehow directly related to who John Terry has or has not been shagging. What is wrong with everyone?

Every day I put the radio on and have to listen to some moralistic whingeing about how footballers get paid too much and how appalling it is that a man who is privileged enough to wear the England Captain’s armband could even contemplate an extra-marital affair, let alone one with the ex-girlfriend of a team-mate. It is good for entertainment though and is admittedly far more amusing than the endless phone-ins and media discussion in Cyprus about solving the Cyprus problem, which are just not funny at all.

Now if Terry does resign as England captain who should take over? Wayne Rooney, Stevie G, Ashley Cole? Is there anyone in the England team who is squeaky clean in their personal life? Does it matter or should it just be about the football and their ability on the pitch? Everything else is just gossip and an entertaining aside. One caller said, ‘you just can’t go around shagging your mate’s bird’. What, not even if she is an underwear model? No, it is not a nice thing to do but I bet half the country would do the same if they had the chance…..

The good news is that in the wider cyber-community that is Facebook there are more people in the group that want to keep Terry as Captain than those that don’t. I am sure this will influence Capello’s decision. I am with the ‘Keep him as captain group’. I don’t care who he shags and he was very nice to my son when Chelsea came to Cyprus. Terry joked with him when we stalked the players at the Hilton Hotel in Nicosia. But if he has to go, well maybe they should bring back Beckham as Captain. But then again there were rumours about him having an affair; his children do have silly names and nobody really likes Victoria, do they, even though she is now helping out as a dinner lady at her kids school in LA? So who is left? Maybe it should be someone who isn’t a footballer at all. The Queen? Susan Boyle?

Oh well, enough entertainment for a few weeks. Tomorrow, back to sunny Cyprus.
