Film review: Warm Bodies**

By Preston Wilder 20/03/13
Alas, poor zombies; I knew them, Horatio. Once upon a time, in George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1979) – not the first films to feature zombies, but the first to place them at centre-stage – the living dead came with a political edge. The African-American hero was (wrongly, but significantly) mistaken for a zombie in Night, while zombie-dom came directly from the ghetto in Dawn – a film that also showed them standing forlornly outside the glass doors of a shopping mall, excluded and disenfranchised... 1 comment

Restaurant review: Phukhet, Paphos

By Nan Mackenzie 20/03/13
Those who claim a truly authentic oriental culinary orientation will nod with recognition when I say that there is a massive difference between indigenous Chinese food and those dishes exported to satisfy less adventurous palates. The former will show an almost unbridled willingness to chew down on bits of animals we didn’t know were ever worth eating, for the latter an adventurous Chinese meal come Saturday night would be egg fried rice, lemon chicken and a dish of prawn crackers... Bar Review: Oti Nanai, Limassol

By Anna Hassapi 20/03/13
Oti Nanai roughly translates as whatever and according to the bar’s owner Dino Costi, the name represents the venue’s laid back and welcoming attitude. “We chose this name because we are simple and welcome everyone. Whoever you are, whatever you are, you are welcome!,” Dino explained... Read on

Film review: Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters*

By Preston Wilder 13/03/13
Fusion is everywhere these days. It’s the obvious by-product of a hi-tech, prosperous age where everything’s available but originality is as scarce as ever. If you can’t create a new recipe, find two wildly diverse ingredients and meld them together. If you can’t compose a new song, sample two other songs and produce a mash-up. If you don’t have a movie idea, grab two old ideas and collide them creatively – or not so creatively. ... Read on

Restaurant review: Kanella Bar and Grill, Limassol

By Stephanie Robb 13/03/13
To those that have not realised yet, Saripolou Street has officially become the new going out epicenter of Limassol. With bars and restaurants opening up left, right and centre and with spring on its way, it is the go to place at the moment. With so many to chose from, how do you make a choice?Difficult sometimes but I opted for the brand new Kanella. Kanella, which means cinnamon in Greek, opened its doors about a week ago and has definitely made an impact. The issue with new restaurants is that the cuisine does take some time to find its way, and you can get below par food. However, I was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case for Kanella, a place where you can kick back enjoy your grill food with a gourmet garnish... Read on

Bar Review: Pingouino Café, Paphos

By Bejay Browne 13/03/13
If you enjoy sitting back, relaxing and watching the world go by a visit to Pingouino café and lounge bar in Paphos is top of the list.Situated in the area known locally as ‘the tourist area’ - on a corner close to the sparkling waters of the seafront, Pingouino is a stalwart of the coastal town, the café-bar originally starting life as a family-run ice cream parlour with a Penguin as the logo - hence the modified name.As times changed and customers wanted more than just ice cream - although a good selection is still available - Pingouino café lounge-bar evolved. With three sides constructed of glass and a good sized outdoor seating area to the front this is a great location to visit whatever the weather... Read on

Restaurant review: Pelagos, Oroklini, Larnaca

By Nathan Morley 06/03/13
I haven't been to Oroklini for ages, so it was nice to drive over there last weekend to discover that the Pelagos Restaurant was booming with business and serving good wholesome Cyprus food. This district has a plethora of decent restaurants, including two well-established curry houses, a decent Mexican and half a dozen fish tavernas. The Pelagos however, describes itself as a ‘Mediterranean Bar and Grill’.It overlooks the sea with a large patio which literally touches the water and gives a stunning vista of Larnaca bay, it the perfect place to spend a few relaxed hours. ...
