A FEMALE member of a German military ship located some 84 nautical miles from Larnaca’s south-east coast was airlifted to a private hospital at a little after midnight yesterday after suffering serious health problems.The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (KSED) announced that it received a request from the ship’s authorities for immediate transportation of the patient to land.The ship was out at sea as part of the UN’s mission to Lebanon, UNIFIL.KSED immediately summoned a police helicopter from Larnaca airport, which flew to the scene with a volunteer Civil Defence nurse on board... 2 comments

A 76-YEAR-OLD man lost his life yesterday when his motorbike collided with a car in the opposite lane on the old Mosfiliotis-Alambra road in Larnaca. Antonis Safiris from Kornos was turning right into a dirt road at around 8:30am, the police said.The 28-year-old who hit him was not inebriated, the police said. They added they were investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.Safiris was taken to Nicosia General Hospital where the doctors on duty declared him dead.  He was not wearing a helmet, the police said. ... Biker killed in head-on collision with truck

GREEK national Apostolos Makris, 51, was killed on Sunday after his motorbike collided head-on with a truck, driven by a 28-year-old man from Limassol who abandoned the scene.The 28-year-old, who was yesterday remanded for three days, was chased by police, who found two grinders – one with traces of white powder and the other with a green substance, both believed to be narcotics – in his truck.According to police, the accident occurred a little after 11am on Sunday on Amathounta Avenue, when the 28-year-old lost control of his truck and skidded into the other side of the road, colliding head-on with Makris’ motorbike.“The 51-year-old, who was wearing a helmet, was fatally injured and taken to Limassol, where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” said police... 4 comments

A DRUNK driver crashed his car carrying two passengers into an empty corner shop on the Larnaca-Dhekelia road on Tuesday.According to Larnaca police spokesman Christos Andreou, at around 11pm, a 51-year-old man driving a car on Aristotelis Valaoritis Street heading towards Dhekelia with two 29-year-old passengers lost control of the car near the entrance to Larnaca port, ending up in the empty corner shop.  The driver was injured and taken to the surgery ward at Larnaca hospital for treatment while the two passengers escaped unharmed. A preliminary alcohol test found him to be almost four times over the limit, registering 87mlg, compared to the 22mlg limit. A 55-YEAR-OLD Limassol man was killed yesterday afternoon after his vehicle overturned on the motorway near the hospital exit.Police said the van initially crashed into the motorway divider before overturning at around 1pm.Driver Savvas Savva was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.Police are looking into reports that the accident happened when Savva tried to return to the left lane of the road after overtaking another vehicle.The accident shut down the road for more that an hour causing a traffic jam in the area... 1 comment

Injured after head-on collision with truck

A TRUCK transporting sand collided head on with a pensioner’s car in Paphos yesterday, leaving the driver in a serious condition.The accident brought back memories of a similar collision back in 1999 on the same road, which saw six people killed by a truck - also transporting grit - that lost control of the breaks. Among them was a pregnant woman.The truck collided head on with a saloon car, driven by a 75-year-old who is being treated in Paphos General Hospital in a serious condition.“As I was working I heard two loud noises; I realised it was an accident and ran outside with my father,” said eye witness Nicos Mouzouras. “I checked the first injured man in the saloon, I saw he was bleeding. British man’s death was an accident

A BRITISH man who was found lying in the road next to his bicycle in Paphos last week died of multiple injuries to his head, police said yesterday.“The post mortem results on the dead man revealed he had sustained multiple injuries, mostly to his head, which had been caused by an accident on his bicycle, Paphos police spokesman Nicos Tsapis said.Gary Lee Vint, 40, a permanent resident,was found on Akamantos Avenue in Peyia at around 9.40pm last Friday. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Paphos general hospital.According to Tsapis, there were no signs of damage to the dead man’s bicycle to indicate it had collided with another vehicle.
