INSTEAD of changing the constitution to lift deputies’ immunity – used  by some to avoid paying traffic fines – the House Institutions Committee yesterday decided to introduce an in-house system so that the House President can be informed of any violations by lawmakers.“We decided to follow the practice of the Attorney-General informing the House President (of violations), who can then let MPs know via their party leaders,” head of the Institutions Committee Demetris Syllouris said.DIKO vice-chairman Nicolas Papadopoulos said that although the system may be abused, “MPs needed to be able to take on authority, the army (and) the police, when appropriate”. ... 9 comments

Tsalikidis wants to stand trial in Greece

ATTORNEY-GENERAL Petros Clerides yesterday confirmed that the National Guard (NG) chief Stylianos Nasis sent a letter on Thursday relaying the desire of his predecessor, Petros Tsalikidis, to stand trial for the charges he faces in relation to the Mari naval base blast last July. Clerides said that he had refused to comment on ongoing procedures because “it is not useful” but was forced to confirm the accuracy of information leaked by daily newspaper Phileleftheros.He said that Nasis asked in writing whether the Republic of Cyprus would consent to Tsalikidis standing trial in his native Greece where he is currently residing. ... 3 comments

Two questioned by police for insulting Christofias

TWO men, 25 and 30, admitted insulting President Demetris Christofias by jeering at him and shouting ‘Christofias (you are a) coward’ on Thursday night in Paralimni outside the premises of the Association of Panathnaikos Fans.At the time of the incident the president and his entourage were passing by.The men were brought in for questioning and released, and will be charged at a later date, said police sources.According to police the incident was reported to Famagusta police headquarters and following an investigation the two men were located and asked to go down to the station for questioning.However they were both released after the 25-year-old admitted to jeering and the 30-year-old to insulting Christofias... 20 comments

Clerides tight-lipped on Tsalikidis

 ATTORNEY-GENERAL, Petros Clerides, yesterday refused to answer a question on whether he had authorised the issuance of a European arrest warrant for former National Guard chief Petros Tsalikidis, who had previously failed to show up before Larnaca district court in relation to last July’s blast at Mari.An arrest warrant – valid only in Cyprus – was issued for Tsalikidis after he had failed to show up for a routine referral. As a response, Larnaca court postponed the hearing until May 18. A Greek national – Tsalikidis – currently resides in Greece and his arrest warrant needs to be converted to a European arrest warrant before he can be extradited to Cyprus. ... ATTORNEY-GENERAL Petros Clerides, has “not decided yet” whether he will issue a European arrest warrant for former National Guard chief Petros Tsalikidis who failed to show up on Monday before Larnaca district court in relation to last July’s blast at Mari.Clerides said yesterday that the arrest warrant issued for Tsalikidis was valid in Cyprus, since it was issued in a Cypriot court. Tsalikidis – a Greek national – is currently residing in Greece and a court notice was posted outside his home “as he was absent due to illness,” Clerides said.Because Tsalikidis failed to show up on Monday, Larnaca court decided to push backwards the date for a routine referral of the case to criminal court to May 18. ... 3 comments

‘Christofias hires former AG in gas bill dispute’

ALTHOUGH the Attorney-general’s office said that a bill taking away negotiation powers from the Commerce Minister does not violate the constitution, President Demetris Christofias is considering appealing to the Supreme Court using former Attorney-general Alecos Markides as legal consultant, according to reports.Legislators, with the exception of ruling AKEL, voted through a bill in late February taking away much of the power of the Commerce Minister in negotiating with companies bidding for offshore gas licences.The bill made binding the decisions of a committee of technocrats to assess bids and negotiate with companies, which the Commerce Minister would then have to pass to Cabinet for final approval... 5 comments

Action needed on stolen luxury cars

ACTION must be taken to stop the growing problem of luxury stolen cars from being imported, according to CID HQ’s head Yiannakis Charalambous.“We have put into play several actions, a meeting has also been organised under instructions from the Attorney-general (Petros Clerides) concerning various bodies, such as the police, customs, the road transport department, the legal services, in order to catch all of these things that are happening,” said Charalambous.Charalambous, who was speaking on the state broadcaster, explained the growing phenomenon saying that in the past only stolen cars from the UK could be found on the island, however now they are coming in from more than seven countries... 3 comments

Prosecution sought of warden in prison rape case

 THE POLICE will recommend the criminal prosecution of a prison warden who was on duty when a 19-year-old prisoner allegedly got raped, according to reports.The alleged rape happened in December in Central Prison when the youth was locked in his cell with a 50-year-old convicted rapist against normal procedure. Criminal and disciplinary procedures were launched by the state following a report into the rape allegations by Ombudswoman Eliza Savvidou.The police report will be handed to Attorney-general Petros Clerides within days, police spokesman Andreas Angelides said yesterday.Earlier this week, the 19-year-old was granted a presidential pardon and has been released at the recommendation of Attorney-general Petros Clerides... 1 comment
