Our view: Blaming the government for banking crisis is excessive
EVERYONE is now calling for an investigation to establish the reasons for the difficulties being faced by Cyprus banks. The idea for an investigation was first mentioned by the former Rector of the Cyprus University Stavros Zenios and was embraced by President Christofias in a speech he made on Saturday at the conference of the bank employees union ETYK.Christofias said he was in talks with the new Governor of the Central Bank regarding the launching of an in-depth investigation into the banking crisis. Ruayrungruang, was interested in buying €500 million worth of Cyprus government bonds, said Kazamias. ... 3 comments

Christofias: civil service needs to be effective during EU presidency
PRESIDENT Demetris Christofias yesterday gave a ‘pep talk’ to senior civil servants ahead of Cyprus taking over the EU presidency in July.To succeed, however, the civil service needs to be “consistent, prudent and effective”. The president told his audience of mandarins he often gets the feeling that the civil service suffers from “pre-accession syndrome” where the EU dictated laws that had to be harmonised. Now, as a member state Cyprus has a right to discuss and give its views on legislative proposals. When he has given his opinions, not always popular, in the European Council, his views were respected and sometimes taken aboard, he said. ... 10 comments
