BECAUSE the state has been unable to provide the public and its lawmakers with a free legal portal where all legal documents and legislation would be available and searchable to anyone, the Bar Association has done it instead. As of May 1 www.CyLaw.org has a complete inventory of Cyprus’ legislation and legal documents, all Supreme Court decisions and a number of decisions from executive bodies. “It’s a huge project,” the Bar Association’s head Doros Ioannides said. “It’s an endeavour undertaken by the state without any result until today,” he added. ... 8 comments

AEL end their 43-year wait for championship title
Luciano Bebe’s goal 15 minutes from time helped AEL beat Anorthosis 1-0, capturing the national championship title after a 43-year-long drought at the Tsirion Stadium in Limassol on Saturday.Anorthosis started the game brightly, with experienced striker Yiannis Okkas missing two quality chances early on. The home side responded by hitting the bar and the post in the same minute, when first Gilberto’s powerful strike from the distance hit the bar in 18th minute and then Chris Dickson hit Matus Kozacik’s post after a placed shot from inside the area. The visitors reclaimed the initiative towards the end of the first half and both Okkas and Vincent Laban were denied by the excellent Matias Degra in AEL’s goal... 1 comment

Shiarly warns of painful measures
FINANCE Minister Vassos Shiarly warned that without action to reign in the country’s deficit, Cyprus could follow the road of other EU countries that had to be bailed out and suffer painful austerity measures imposed from outside. Interaction between development and diplomacy in China
For us Cypriots, China is not only a friendly country with a rich cultural heritage, but also a strong political and economic supporter. It suffices to mention the support we get at the UN Security Council, support which is based on principles, and the forthcoming multimillion investment in the old Larnaca airport. Today, China’s international influence is a well established fact and it augurs well for Cyprus to have such a great friend... 3 comments
The historical event that haunts modern international relations
WHILE the modern-day Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923, eight years after its Ottoman predecessors embarked on a massive and systematic undertaking to rid the empire of its Armenian population, the country today often finds itself in diplomatic spats with various Western nations over its history. Outside the periphery of geopolitics, it would be perplexing to most as to why an event that occurred nearly one hundred years ago would impact relations between Turkey and the United States and various European countries. The answer lies in the annals of history... 12 comments
