15/05/12
TURKISH Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu yesterday said President Demetris Christofias’ statement that a solution to the Cyprus problem was far from near was significant, as he was expressing the Greek Cypriots’ position that they don’t want a solution. He added that Christofias wasn’t being honest when referring to the Cyprus problem’s resolution. The decision to not seek re-election belongs to Christofias and his party, Eroglu said, adding that he would soon offer a detailed assessment of the president’s address.Earlier in the day, Eroglu said the Cypriot-owned negotiations for the Cyprus problem ended with the United Nations’ Secretary-General’s decision not to hold a multilateral conference... 22 comments

Leaders’ meetings ‘a waste of time’

By Stefanos Evripidou 03/05/12
MEETINGS BETWEEN the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus are “a waste of time” given the stance of Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, said President Demetris Christofias yesterday.Asked to comment on the UN’s decision last Friday to downgrade the talks, end leaders’ meetings and initiate a round of shuttle diplomacy between the two sides to decide the way forward, Christofias said: “There is no issue of changing the process. The process will not change.”“The Turkish Cypriot leader does not want any meetings between the two leaders. In any case, such meetings are a waste of time. I have told Mr Eroglu that talking to him is like trying to bring down a wall by throwing eggs at it,” he added.   ... 12 comments

By Stefanos Evripidou 11/04/12
TURKEY’S PLANS to explore for hydrocarbons in the occupied areas are “foolish and without substance”, Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis said yesterday. The purpose of drilling holes in “our land” is to satisfy public opinion since Turkey cannot find partners to participate in the “illegal” exploration, she argued. According to Turkish Cypriot press, drilling for hydrocarbons will start after April 24 in the occupied Famagusta village of Singrasi. The same reports say the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) is in the process of bringing drilling equipment to the island. ... 3 comments

Where to next for Cyprus talks?

By Stefanos Evripidou 30/03/12
THE Cyprus negotiations were left up in the air yesterday after the two leaders met for what could very well be their last time given the lack of progress to date, and the obstacles arising in the coming months.Although aides to the two leaders were still meeting on property, no new meeting was fixed between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu before UN Special Adviser Alexander Downer goes to New York mid-April to meet with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Eroglu said after yesterday’s meeting that as far as the Turkish Cypriot side was concerned, they had made it clear the meeting was at least the last one until Ban decides whether or not to call an international conference... 11 comments

Varosha at the forefront

By Simon Bahceli 27/03/12
TURKISH Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu took the ‘official UN line’ on Varosha last night after remaining tight-lipped all day following reports that Varosha could be opened to its Greek Cypriot residents on July 1 – under Turkish Cypriot administration. The report in Turkish daily Milliyet naturally drew strong reactions from the Greek Cypriot side, which said any proposals, which violated UN resolution would be rejected.“Actions that aim to create impressions and go beyond decisions of the international organisation [UN] or violate them are not accepted by the Greek Cypriot side,” said Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou. Turkey and the north remained silent about the reports for much of the day yesterday... 18 comments
