Stricter fines suggested for drunk driving and speeding
STRICTER fines for speeding and drunk driving were suggested at the House Communications and House Legal Affairs Committees yesterday.“We’ll be looking to fine people, depending on the seriousness of the offence,” said House Legal Affairs Committee head Ionas Nicolaou, who added the proposals are currently being discussed with the police.According to Nicolaou, the aim of the new regulations are to cut down on the number of cases being sent to court.“For example, when a driver’s been breathalysed and has 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath then they will be fined €100,” said Nicolaou. One in 12 drivers charged
ONE IN twelve motorists was charged with drink-driving during a two-week island-wide campaign conducted by police to prevent and reduce traffic accidents. It was the third weekend in row that the same percentage of drivers were caught. According to a police announcement, between February 20 and March 4, police carried out 6,757 alcohol tests on drivers, with 571 found to be over the limit. ... 1 comment
45 charged with drink driving in one night
TRAFFIC POLICE charged 45 people with drink driving on Friday night as part of an ongoing campaign to prevent and reduce road deaths, serious accidents and juvenile delinquency on the roads. Head of Limassol traffic police Michalis Katsounotos said yesterday following an operation conducted in cooperation with police headquarters in Nicosia and local police stations in Limassol, 45 drivers were charged for drink driving, while two 17-year-olds were arrested, one girl for driving through red lights and a boy for riding a motorcycle without a licence. One in 12 drivers drunk for second weekend
FOR THE second weekend running one in 12 drivers stopped by the police was drunk, head of traffic police Demetris Demetriou said yesterday.Police had intensified tests over the Green Monday long weekend, stopping 2,714 drivers and arresting 233, “around one in twelve,” Demetriou said.Monday was Green Monday, a national holiday with the weekend marking carnival celebrations.A total of 98 of those arrested were in Limassol, the centre of carnival festivities in Cyprus.“I wonder if those people were not caught and arrested by our people how many traffic accidents, even deaths they could have caused,” Demetriou said.He said that 11 of those arrested were “driving at very high speeds... 5 comments
Drunk-driving clampdown
ONE IN twelve drivers stopped by the police over last weekend was drunk, head of traffic police Demetris Demetriou said yesterday.Among them was a 16-year-old girl who got in a traffic accident, Demetriou said.The 16-year-old crashed into parked cars in the early hours of Sunday in Nicosia. She was over the legal limit of 22mg/dl having an ethanol blood concentration of 82 mg/dl, the police said.She lightly scratched two cars. “It’s unthinkable for a young person 16 and a half years old to be caught driving a car at 5am having consumed excessive amounts of alcohol and causing a traffic accident,” Demetriou said.Some 1800 drivers were stopped last weekend with 154 found to be over the legal limit of 22mg/dl... 5 comments
