Waging a war on plastic bags

 THE EUROPEAN Union may soon impose a directive making it obligatory for member states to place restrictions on the number of plastic bags offered by shops, because of the environmental damage they cause. Whilst the move can’t come too soon for local environmentalists, it might prove a tough sell for kiosks, bakeries and supermarkets whose staff regularly hand out plastic bags for the smallest of items.“We want businesses to promote reusable bags, this is very important,” said Environment Commissioner Charalambos Theopemptou, adding that plastic bags are cause for great concern among environmentalists.“I did the rounds and spoke to all the supermarket chains about this and a few have already done this... 10 comments

Paralimni on the lookout for runaway python

THE HUNT for a python on the loose in Paralimni has so far proved fruitless following a complaint to police by a local resident that he had seen one recently slithering after a stray dog.The Paralimni Municipality, Veterinary Services and police were immediately put on alert and began a search for the python. Investigations so far have discovered that no one is missing a dog or a python.Whether it was actually a python – one of the largest snakes in the world and sometimes reaching over 2m in length, is also in question.According to Famagusta police spokesman Giorgos Economou, the 24-year-old reported the incident to police at the beginning of the week, but the incident had taken place two weeks before... 13 comments

Over 55s asked to voice green concerns

THE over 55s are being invited to take part in an international survey, which aims to highlight the environmental concerns of older people ahead of the ‘Earth Summit’ to be held in June.The survey is being conducted by organisations such as Age UK, Community Service Volunteers’ Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP), Help Age International and the Council on the Ageing in Australia(COTA).The study is being led by the Stockholm Environment Institute at the University of York -a global science policy research institute and Simon Fraser University’s Gerontology Research Centre (Canada). ... Fish die due to changing temperatures

THE AGRICULTURE Ministry has fished out around 800kg of dead fish from the Athalassa lake in Nicosia, believed to have died ‘en masse’ due to major fluctuations in the water’s temperature. Head of the ministry’s Fisheries Department Loizos Loizides told yesterday’s Phileleftheros that the fish, belonged to the Tilapia species and were first discovered dead last Wednesday. Restoring and protecting Oroklini Lake
