Concrete mixers and betting shop gutted in separate arson attacks

TWO CONCRETE mixers, and equipment worth €150,000 were completely burnt yesterday at 2am in the Xylotympou industrial area.The fire broke out within the jurisdiction of the Sovereign Base Area (SBA) in Dhekelia.The SBA police said they had heard two loud bangs at around 2am and then “located two burning concrete mixers within a fenced-in area,” SBA spokesman Andreas Pitsillides said.It took the fire service an hour and a half to put out the fire after “superhuman efforts,” he said.  SBA police are investigating “all possibilities” in what is suspected arson, Pitsillides said. ... 1 comment

Police officer climbs into burning building to save woman

Two Kurds set themselves on fire

TWO Kurdish men aged 24 and 29, set themselves on fire outside the Interior Ministry yesterday morning and were taken to hospital with minor burns. The Turkish men of Kurdish origin arrived at the Interior Ministry at around 8am.Around half an hour later, they set fire to dry leaves just across the gated entrance to the ministry,  then jumped into the blaze, burning parts of their bodies.A civil servant holding a fire extinguisher was the first person who rushed to put the fire out but the fire brigade arrived in time to bring the situation under control before anyone was seriously hurt. Fire at kiosk

A FIRE which broke out during the early hours of yesterday at a kiosk in Protaras caused €40,000 worth of damage. A nearby pharmacy and the apartment on the first floor, where no one was living at the time, were also damaged. The cause of the fire is being investigated... Read on

Remanded for clinic blaze

TWO teenagers and a 22-year-old man have been remanded for four days, in connection with destroying the Ayii Anargyri community clinic in Larnaca on Easter Saturday.The clinic was completely destroyed after over 20 youths vandalised the building and burnt it down using firecrackers.Larnaca Police Spokesman Christos Andreou said three suspects were taken to Larnaca District Court yesterday – two boys aged 14 and 16, and the 22-year-old – and were remanded for four days.He added that police were hoping to make around 10 more arrests in connection with the case... 2 comments

Wood illegally collected for bonfires ‘should be confiscated’

THE GREEN Party yesterday called on the police to confiscate wood gathered illegally for the Easter tradition of building bonfires and turn it instead into fire wood for pensioners’ meeting places in the mountain areas.The party said it had “started to receive some worrying information on illegal tree cutting and the theft of wood, ahead of the infamous Easter ‘tradition’ and the standard ‘lambradja war’ that has been taking place over the past years”.The Greens called on the police to be alert and intensify patrols, especially in sensitive areas.“We are calling on citizens to report all incidents of illegal tree cutting to the local authorities, the police and the Green Party,” it added... 5 comments

Fire destroys 20 hectares of forest

A FIRE in Fasouri forest in Limassol, home to most of the island’s Eucalyptus tree species, was almost under control by last night though at least 20 hectares of forestland were lost. The fire started after 5pm under unknown circumstances, it was fought by two helicopters belonging to the British Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) which had to land when it got dark, an SBA spokesman told the Cyprus Mail. Eight fire trucks took over at night, by which time 20 hectares (one hectare is 10,000 square metres) were lost, the spokesman said.“The fire is away from built-up areas,” the spokesman said adding they were not worried that it could pose a threat to people... 4 comments

POLICE are investigating an arson attack in Limassol, during which a car belonging to a 53-year-old was torched during the early hours of yesterday.The car sustained considerable damage according to police. It was parked outside the owner’s home at the time.Police also suspect arson, in a separate incident, as the cause of a fire that broke out on a car parked outside the owner’s home in Nicosia on Wednesday night. Lit cigarette butt could have caused apartment fire

OVER €30,000 worth of damage was caused to an apartment block in Larnaca yesterday from a fire which started in an armchair in the reception area.A lit cigarette butt was reportedly to blame.“There was an armchair in the reception area, which everyone had access to,” said the head of the district’s fire services, Leonidas Leonidou. “No other evidence was found to help our investigations.”Larnaca police spokesman Christos Andreou said there were no indications of arson. “No flammable material or other evidence was found on the scene to determine that the fire was set maliciously,” he said...
