Tsalikidis wants to stand trial in Greece

ATTORNEY-GENERAL Petros Clerides yesterday confirmed that the National Guard (NG) chief Stylianos Nasis sent a letter on Thursday relaying the desire of his predecessor, Petros Tsalikidis, to stand trial for the charges he faces in relation to the Mari naval base blast last July. Clerides said that he had refused to comment on ongoing procedures because “it is not useful” but was forced to confirm the accuracy of information leaked by daily newspaper Phileleftheros.He said that Nasis asked in writing whether the Republic of Cyprus would consent to Tsalikidis standing trial in his native Greece where he is currently residing. ... 3 comments

A HAND grenade exploded yesterday during the early hours outside the home of a 40-year-old National Guard sergeant in Xylofagou.According to police, the explosion caused considerable damage to the front entrance of the house as well as to the walls. Four on remand for army TNT theft

LARNACA District Court remanded four people in custody for three days yesterday in connection with the theft of army explosives from a controlled destruction of ammunitions site at the National Guard’s (NG) firing range in Kalo Chorio. On Tuesday morning, the four suspects were seen speeding away from the Kalo Chorio firing range in a jeep, the court heard. They were chased by a NG car, with which they collided. Two of the suspects – two men aged 23 and 35 – got out of the car and were arrested, but the other two sped off and the car was found abandoned later in the afternoon in Larnaca suburb Klavdia... 2 comments

Army TNT stolen as munitions destroyed

TWO MEN were arrested after explosives were stolen under the noses of the National Guard (NG) during a controlled destruction of obsolete munitions at Kalo Chorio firing range yesterday. During the scheduled destruction of obsolete munitions at around 10am, officials discovered that explosives placed on site by a National Guard explosives expert had gone missing. The army placed small amounts of TNT explosives in 42 separate pits at the firing range, each one containing obsolete munitions used for the Bofors anti-aircraft 40mm gun. According to a defence ministry source, around 1.4kg of TNT was stolen from one of the 42 pits some time after the explosives expert placed the TNT at the pit and before its supposed detonation. ... 6 comments

Greek nationals in talks over national service
