Nicosia municipality determined to cut costs
NICOSIA mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis slammed the government, parliament and the union of municipalities yesterday for reducing state funding, warning of an era of doom if they do not change their stance and if municipalities do not become financially autonomous.“I have the courage and the audacity to state that if the government and parliament do not change their stance and if municipalities do not proceed with administrative and financial autonomy, the next few years will be even worse,” said Yiorkadjis.He was speaking at a news conference yesterday during a presentation of the municipality’s finances... 1 comment
Beware of thieves posing as officials
PEYIA neighbourhood watch has been alerted to an operation by thieves who pretend to be utilities officials in order to case homes ahead of burglaries.Colm Connolly, the press officer of Peyia watch scheme told the Cyprus Mail: “Police have warned us to be alert, and made us aware of thefts which have been committed in the UK for years and have recently spread to Greece.”According to Connolly, gangs of would-be thieves and individuals posing as officials from the water board and other services, are gaining entrance into people’s homes to ‘case them’ for cash and jewellery... 19 comments
Municipal blunder orders couple to clean up land plot...in the north
THE NICOSIA Municipality has sent out letters to all owners of plots of land in Nicosia requesting they clean up their plots within a month or else the authority will do it and charge them for it. The letter came as quite a surprise to one couple whose plot happens to be in the occupied part of the capital. Last Wednesday, one elderly couple received a letter from the Nicosia Municipality’s Health Services, informing them about a cleaning campaign. The letter notified the recipients that as part of its annual clean-up campaign, the municipality is calling on all owners of open spaces to clean up any mess on their land.
