Police warning on Troodos roads

POLICE ARE calling on weekend drivers heading to Troodos to follow carefully police instructions to ensure a smooth flow of traffic up and down the island’s highest peak after days of heavy snowfall closed roads and schools in the mountainous regions.According to a police announcement, during peak driving hours today, police will prohibit buses from taking the Prodromos-Troodos road. Instead buses seeking to reach Troodos Square will have to get there via Platres or Karvouna.  Buses using the Platres-Troodos road are encouraged to use the Environment Centre parking next to the square, while those coming from Karvouna are asked to park next to the Air Force base. ... DESPITE the arrival of spring, light snow and rain are expected until Monday, according to the Meteorological Service.“The temperature will slowly start to rise by one or two degrees but up until Monday it will remain below the norm for the season,” said meteorological officer, Haris Zachariades yesterday.Temperatures today are set to remain at 11C inland, 13C on the coast and 0C in the mountains.Heavy snowfall in the mountains on Wednesday blocked roads, which have remained closed, shutting various schools in the mountains and semi-mountainous regions, mainly in the Limassol and Nicosia areas. The lower-lying areas, including the capital, also got their fair share of snow for the first time in years... 4 comments

Mountain dwellers plan to protest cut in fuel allowance

 THE RESIDENTS of mountainous areas are threatening measures against a government decision to cut their heating allowance this year.A heating allowance has been given since 2003 to anyone living in an altitude of 600 metres or higher. Residents were expecting some €5 million as help with the winter heating expenses.The allowance is not part of the budget proper but Cabinet would annually issue a decision to pay it out,  until this year when it was cut as part of the state’s efforts to curb expenses, said Tasos Michaelides, head of the mountainous communities’ committee and Palechori community leader. ... 8 comments
