UN decides to take a back seat
THE UNITED Nations yesterday informed the two leaders of its decision to downgrade the peace talks, putting an end to “unproductive” leaders’ meetings while calling on the leaders to figure out a way to convene a multilateral conference in the summer. Key meeting on Cyprus postponed for 24 hours
A KEY meeting on the future of the Cyprus peace talks at the UN Headquarters in New York was yesterday postponed due to conflicting schedules. Instead, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will meet this afternoon with UN Special Adviser Alexander Downer to discuss his latest report on the status of the talks and the next steps forward. Downer will hold meetings with other interested parties on Monday while according to Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, he has requested a meeting with Eroglu for April 27. “I suppose he will meet with (President Demetris) Christofias and consult with us on the report he will send to the Security Council,” Eroglu told reporters. ... 7 comments
