Football bosses meet Justice Minister
THE CYPRUS Football Federation (KOP) yesterday began a series of meetings to discuss the prevention of violence and hooliganism when the new football season starts at the end of the summer.In a meeting with Justice Minister Loucas Louca, the head of KOP, Costakis Koutsokoumnis, handed over a number of files sent by UEFA on dodgy bets placed on local games, believed to have been fixed. KOP also relayed its concerns over the methods used in policing matches.After the meeting, Koutsokoumnis said he had relayed some of the mistakes the federation felt had been made during this year’s championship, as well as those concerning the UEFA files... 1 comment
Much more than just a bonfire
LAST EASTER weekend was marred by violence which saw 56 people arrested on various charges and six police officers injured. Much of it was carried out by teenagers and young men.In the space of three days, a 19-year-old man attacked and bit a policeman, a 14-year-old boy was chased and arrested after stealing a car and setting it on fire, a Limassol gang of youths attacked and injured policemen while a Nicosia gang set on fire a flat belonging to a foreign couple.And that wasn’t all. Youths rampaged through the island’s districts competing among themselves to create the biggest Easter bonfire or lambradja.
