Potato packers stage warning strike
AROUND 100 potato packers went on a 24-hour strike yesterday to protest against wage and benefit cuts. The potato packers went on strike in Larnaca, Vrysoules and Liopetri over a 22 per cent in wages and other cuts including overtime. They warned that unless their demands are met, they will proceed with an indefinite strike. Around 50 workers gathered outside a packing unit in Ormidhia to make the point that it is staffed by foreign labour who have little legal protection and are paid much lower salaries, thereby increasing unfair competition in the market place. ... 2 comments
Our view: CyBC has turned a minor issue into a major injustice
THE NON-PAYMENT of the CyBC’s staff wages on time was still the main news story on the state corporation’s current affairs shows yesterday. It is quite remarkable how a decision taken by the legislature last Thursday – not to approve the budget of the CyBC – could still be hogging the corporation’s radio, television and web headlines four days later. Nothing new has happened since apart from the fact that staff unions had decided to stage two, 10-minute work stoppages every day in protest against the decision. ... 5 comments
Women in semi-state sector paid 40 per cent less than men
WOMEN are paid considerably less than men in semi-state organisations, while their careers are stifled by a mentality that fosters stereotypical profiles and attitudes, labour minister Sotiroulla Charalambous said yesterday.“Despite an existence of legislation and a wage scale system that excludes discrimination, the wage discrepancy between men and women in Cyprus’ semi-governmental sector is something that needs to be addressed” Charalambous said.Speaking at a presentation of a study concerning the issue conducted in 2006, the minister stressed the need to change the mentality in place and to strike a balance between professional and family life... 5 comments
