CyprusFOLLOWING A weekend of torrential rain, the island’s dams have been filled to 60 per cent of their total capacity.
Last weekend alone, from Friday evening until Monday morning, a total of 6.3million cubic metres of water flowed into Cyprus’ dams, according to Phaedros Roussis, the officer in charge of monitoring water levels in dams.
In total, dams on the island currently hold 174million cubic metres of water.
The weekend’s rains were especially heavy in the Larnaca district where the Fire Brigade received 16 calls to free people trapped in cars and pump out flooded basements.
According to the meteorological service, 117.5mm of rain fell during February with 51.3mm of the total falling over the past weekend.
The heavy rains completely cleared the atmosphere of the high levels of dust which had been plaguing many people over the previous days.
“There is no dust forecast for the next three days,” said Sophia Loucas, of the Meteorological Service of the outlook for the immediate future.
Isolated showers are expected over the course of Wednesday and Friday.
No rain is forecast for today and Thursday, with the weather forecast to be temperate on both days.
The temperatures over the next three days are expected to remain within the region of 18-20C, which is approximately two to three degrees higher than the seasonal average,
