Day out in Larnaca could cost you €114.97

LARNACA has the most expensive coffee out of 12 holiday destinations popular with British tourists, a recent study has found.

According to the study carried out by the UK Post Office, a regular tourist would spend around €114.97 for a day in Larnaca.

Coffee in Larnaca cost €3.24 compared with Portugal at the other end of the spectrum at €0.75.

France was not far behind, but still cheaper than Cyprus with a cup of coffee costing €2.15 whereas Italy charged just a little more than Portugal with €0.92.

Apart from coffee, the day’s buys included beer, soft drinks, sunscreen, ice cream, a sun bed, bucket and spade, a beach towel, a lilo, jelly shoes and a pedal boat for an hour.

Overall, Cyprus was fifth cheapest among 12 countries.

The cheapest was Portugal at €82.38 per day and the most expensive was Italy at €168.93.

Among the tourist attractions the survey checked out was hiring a pedal boat for an hour. Cyprus came in most expensive at €14 while Portugal was charging less than half, at €6.50.

Laying on a beach on a sun bed for half a day finds Cyprus looking good alongside Spain at €2.15 whereas Italy charged €14.

However, things didn’t look good for Cyprus when the survey went to water parks.

It showed that tickets for a family of two adults and two children, cost around €107.91.

Moving on from fun in the water and on to family attractions, France topped the list with an absolutely free attraction at Mont Saint-Michel and Cyprus came in seventh charging €32.35 for a family to go on a glass bottom boat cruise.

A family meal was another important category, and Cyprus came fourt, charging €50.65 for a two adults and two children which showed a 20 percent decrease from 2009.

Greece’s prices had dropped 17 percent and although Italy’s fell by 3.0 percent, they still came in most expensive with a meal costing €100.

Hiring a car that uses Unleaded95 petrol for three days costs approximately €183.34 in Cyprus - the seventh cheapest out of 20 countries.

The cheapest country was the USA and the most expensive was Norway at €339.

A diesel car however, would cost around €181 in Cyprus and came halfway down the list. The cheapest country for diesel was Portugal whilst France was the most expensive.

Is the UK post office sure that they sent their agent to Larnaca? This prices sound like they come from my hometown, the horrendous Paphos, where we are proud to charge 3 Euro for a frape, 2.50 for a cyprus coffee and over 5 euro for anything more fancy. I frequent Larnaca a lot, and I drink coffee for 1 Euro in lots of places, and if I was to spend 115 euros in a evening, I'd take 3 people along to Nippon, one of the finest Japanese restaurants in Scala, and one of the most expesive eateries there. 115 wouldn't buy you a cheap date for two in Paphos!

I was in Cyprus on holiday for two weeks in December 2010 and was based in Paphos. Admittedly it was winter and the summer price lists were under the counter but I found the weather quite bearable (would hate to be there now) and food and drink prices were not cheap but nevertheless reasonable. We did not eat at fancy places and found the food at the more humble establishments to be very good. Supermarket prices were in general comparable to South Africa.Fish dishes and mezzes at restaurants were a bit steep but there were plenty of good and more affordable alternatives

Thoroughly enjoyed the holiday.

Christoph: if one does not stick your head out of the 5-star hotels, they won't get anything else. There are awesome places in North Cyprus as well as South, and it takes a bit of searching.

Northern Cyprus has little to offer other than casinos and poor service. They don't know how to serve tourists, so why go?

Cyprus Mail has Stupidest Journalists of 12 Newspapers on the bottom of my bird cage. High prices are good to get rid of the riff raff chav scum. Now does Cyprus seriously want to be considered the "cheapest" place to holiday. Dear Editor hire new staff and sack this moron!

High prices only for tourists. That's good so it does not get so overcrowded with the tourists. Especially no cheap tourists. Locals know where to go to get coffee under 3,24€ I never paid so much. I also doubt that this numbers a correct. I used to live in France and it is much more expensive.

Cyprus did get more expensive. It is still cheaper than UK, but turism competiotion becomes stif.

As to the North Cyprus, I crossed the border at Lidra Str in Nicosia, and the prices for food (kebabs) amd drinks (bars) were the same if not higher than in RoC. I was trully surprised as I expected the "bargains" so many talk about - no such luck.

Larnaca is one of the ugliest cities in world, why would anyone go there and pay so much for coffea? To see what? It is full of fast food junk establishments, nothing interesting to see.

Alan Osman from London comments:

The RoC is pricing itself out of the market. There is no reason for these prices other then pure greed. I'd rather spend my holiday in North Cyprus which has a better coastline and is much cheaper than the South.

AROUND € 107.91? I am really impressed by this level of precision!

And to John from Larnaca: The best course of action is probably to keep CTO out of anything even remotely related to tourism. Perhaps they could be asked to manage Chuch Property in Kyrenia.
