Leaders meet on property

THE TWO leaders yesterday discussed the thorny issue of property and would continue to do so next week, the United Nations said yesterday.

President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervish Eroglu met for a bit over an hour-and-a-half and “concentrated their discussions on the issue of property.”

UN special adviser Alexander Downer said data and papers on property exchanged by the two sides in the past were the basis of discussion.

“They are going to meet again next Tuesday at 10 o’clock and they are going to be continuing that discussion,” Downer said after the morning meeting. “As for meetings beyond that, we will have more to say about that next week once the leaders have given some thought as to how they would like to proceed from next week on.”

Following talks with the two leaders in New York at the end of January, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the current round of negotiations that started some three years ago had yielded little progress.

Ban said he would report to the UN Security Council at the end of February on how the negotiations were progressing and at the end of March would seek a review of the process from Downer, which could lead to the calling of an multilateral conference.

Asked about the report yesterday, Downer said he could not speculate on its contents.

“This is a report from me to the Secretary-General at the end of March on the way forward,” he told reporters. “Today is late February so in a month or so, I’ll be turning my mind to this challenging task of producing this report. But I don’t know what it will say.  I simply can’t speculate on it at this stage.”
