Marcoullis urges EU counterparts to pressure Turkey on flight ban
Topic tags
CyprusTRANSPORT Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis yesterday urged her EU counterparts to put pressure on Turkey to lift its airspace ban on Cypriot aircraft.
During a meeting she hosted with the heads of diplomatic missions of EU members in Nicosia, Marcoullis said Cypriot airlines were incurring millions of euros in losses as a result of the ban.
Marcoullis called the meeting in the wake of last weekend’s strike by Greece’s air traffic controllers, which crippled the airline industry as the island’s only air access to Europe is via Athens.
The heads of the EU diplomatic missions heard from senior officials of Cyprus Airways and Eurocypria that they were losing millions of euros every year because of Turkey’s failure to open its ports to Cypriot traffic.
Because Cypriot aircraft must make detours around Turkish airspace to a number of European destinations, they expend much more fuel than foreign airlines would for the same mileage.
Turkey does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus, and has refused to open its ports to Cyprus since the latter joined the European Union in 2004.
Eurocypria bosses said the company had lost some €13 million between 2004 and 2009 because of the ban, while Cyprus Airways estimates its own losses at €15.4 million for the same time period.
“If we were to factor in all the 36 years of the Turkish occupation, the cost would be in the dozens, if not hundreds of millions,” Marcoullis said at a news conference later.
Marcoullis has asked that discussion of the Turkish ban be included on the agenda of the EU’s Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council, to be held in Luxembourg on 15 October.
“I feel that this time the response [from the EU] will be more tangible and positive,” said Marcoullis.
“Following today’s presentation, I have no doubt that the EU will display solidarity toward the Republic of Cyprus so as to put an end to this unacceptable practice by Turkey,” she added.

i must agree, the air space and ports should be open to Cypriot vessels of any kind, that would show good will on behalf of the Turks.................
yon mustafa from UK comments:
Now that the GCs have had a little taste of the embargoes that the TCs have been living under for the last 47 years maybe they will be a little more sympathetic towards our efforts to lift the unjust embargoes imposed on us.
But I just don't think so. They have been offered on many occasions a compromise to lift Turkey's embargoes against the RoC in exchange for them lifting the embargoes against the TRNC, but on all occasions they have refused. Serves them right.

I don't recollect that this article was about Byron or food?
The Turks are not told what to do by the EU but Greek Cyprus is, so what is the good of asking them to pressure Turkey?
DAVE THE IMPALER comments:
Fevzi, I recommend you read some Byron it's true he was a "big poofter" as you put it. I understand the sultan at the time had a soft spot for him and so did Ali Pasha. Byron really did enjoy himself in the company of turks. At the end he sided with the Greeks becuase he saw them as the underdog.
DAVE THE IMPALER comments:
Fevzi, I have you know the term "dude" was first used in print in 1876, in Putnam's Magazine.
You're right my comments on "CHEAP AND CHEERFUL TURKISH FOOD" was meant for Loriot of Lapta. Well spoted and sorry about that. Have a Greek coffee on me.

Sounds fair - as long as Cypriot airspace is opened to Turkish commercial aircraft.

Loriot from Lapta comments:
Fact is that Greeks learned (somewhat) to cook while kept under Ottoman rule. They have picked up most dishes during that time but have not mastered to do them well. But there is still time to learn!
Christoph from USA comments:
Greek food is far more appetizing than anything Turkish. In the USA everybody knows what Greek food is, nobody partakes of Turkish cuisine.

You dude, I thought you went to uni, you attribute the comment 'Greek food is generally held to be badly cooked Turkish recipes' to me - in fact it was Loriot of Lapta (Fri, 30th July, 17.51) Will you apologise?
Why is it that Greek Cypriots can't swallow to say 'Turkish coffee' and 'Turkish delight' like the rest of the world. How petty can they get.
............................................................
Also you keep on commenting Lord Byron about Turks sodomising. He should know, he was a big poofter. He went to the region to help the Greeks get independence from the Turks and get sodomised. And, didn't ancient Greeks widely practise that as well. But what's all this got to do with the Cyprus Problem?
Rahat comments:
Impaler, you nailed it

The buisines people of that beautifull island
I feel have already found this. They are, because of their different
aspects, the one area of both north and south that is progressing.
The key to progress is in their hands, in the short term if only they can convince the masses of their vision of the future.
Not the polititions
Kiran from Bogaz comments:
If only Ms Marcoullis would also encourage the EU to honour its "pledge" to TCs to remove the trade and travel embargo they have suffered for decades, then she may receive some respect from people other than nationalistic Greeks. As it is, her vitriolic opinions against Turks probably bore most euro MPs, who have heard it all before. Airlines taking us to our homeland in the north have had to expend extra on fuel to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars (by having to land in Turkey), so it's quite interesting to hear how she screams when the far richer south has to pay. Mutual freedom of movement will bring the trust and confidence both communities need, and will pave the way for a real agreement.

One more benefit of Ercan: cheaper flights to Istanbul for a good Turkish meal (Greek food is generally held to be badly cooked Turkish recipes).
Fevzi from London & Kyrenia comments:
Some of us are off subject discussing the history of Cyprus again, Turkish Cypriots listing the atrocities committed by the Greek Cypriots and the GCs in denial. We all know these events, they were well documented by the foreigh press as well.
Stupid remark from Marcus as well - 'there is no such place as the TRNC except in the minds of a few demented people'. You've got a screw loose in the head, Marcus, or something is really hurting you. The TRNC is not imaginary, it may not be recognised but it's no less a democracy than the South, with its head of state, parliament, judiciary, police, etc. What will you do when direct trade comes, as one day it will, cry your eyes out?
Sticking to the subject of this article, don't cry MARCOULLIS, you know Turkey doesn't recognise you, and Turkey is not a member of the EU, so why do you make a fool of yourself complaining. Everyone knows there is a ban on GC aircraft using Turkish air space and everyone knows there is a ban on direct flights to the North. These will be lifted together, not one before the other.
John from Cyprus: (Fri. 30th July 11.37) 'How will everyone benefit if Ercan opens' - Greek Cypriots will benefit by not incurring their losses due to diverting round Turkish airspace, thus saving millions of Euros.

Emir, can't you come up with more events in history where innocent Turkish people were killed? Must have been some instances in the 1800's and 1700's that you can post about. And surely re-hashing old wounds will forever stall the negotating process. You post comments all over this paper, and not one I have seen is constructive. It would seem to a bias outsider that your goal is to ensure no progress is made and that the situation remains as it is. Could it be that you know the north is feeding off the south? Could it be your are deeply afraid that a united Cyprus would mean you will have to actually work to support yourself and no longer hang off the coat tails of others?

- In an interview by Politis (GCASC) newspaper of March 17, 2001 with the Commander of GCNG, Lieutenant General Florakis indicated that the objective of the GCNG is not only defending the South but also “saving the territories in the North Cyprus”.

Phil, honstly it's Surprising what you can find once you read beyond the website of the Turkish Foreign Ministry for information on the Cyprus problem and when it's not Censored under Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code.
The 1964 event usually known as the “Kumsal massacre,” in which a Turkish officer’s wife and children were shot dead in their home, was long used in Turkish Cypriot propaganda, the house turned into a “museum of barbarism.” Although survivors of the event testified that Greek Cypriot paramilitaries committed the act.
By 2004 claims that the Turkish Cypriot leadership itself was responsible for the act were taken quite seriously.
Denktaş’s exaggerated use of the language of martyrdom and images of dead bodies is well documented.

Marcus@
Your knowledge of Cyprus History is very limited, due to Orthodox Church education which doesn’t teach children history of Cyprus 1963 to 1974.
Let me educate you about invasion and ethic cleansing in Cyprus. Not in 1974 but 1963, 1967, and 1974.
First invasion of Cyprus was in 1964 by 20.000 Greeks troops fully equipped, from mainland Greece.
They were in Cyprus for ethnic cleansing of Turkish Cypriots, with help of Eoka thugs.
1963/1974 Turkish Cypriots were subjected to acts of violence by the Greek Cypriot side. Nearly 30,000 Turkish Cypriots were forced to flee from their homes and rendered refugees in enclaves with no freedom of movement and deprived of basic necessities to survive, Greek Cypriot paramilitaries, raided Turkish villages and towns. The armed campaign led to the destruction of 103 Turkish Cypriot and mixed with Greek Cypriot villages along with all the mosques and holy places. Due to immense human suffering, thousands of Turkish Cypriots fled from the island. The Security Council discussed the situation and decided to dispatch a UN peace keeping force in March 1964.
These troops removed from Cyprus 1968 when Turkish government ask Greece to remove those dogs from Cyprus soil at once, which Greece did.
Two more attempt of ethnic cleansing took place 1967 and 1974.
Now get this information in your little brain.
Hasan Has from Girne comments:
I am afraid MARCUS but IT IS THAT SIMPLE.
I don't want to discuss how legal or illegal TRNC is, I don't really care. It currently exist and rules in the north, where I live. The name is irrelevant, what's relevant is the attitue of Greek Cypriots towards Turkish Cypriots.
I am amased how narrow minded people can be. You have to deal with same bunch of people whether you call them Turkish Cyptiot leaders or TRNC leaders or Turkish Federal state leaders.
We don't ask for Direct Trade with TRNC, we ask for Direct Trade with Turkish Cypriots. And to remind you we have some trade with the RoC of south Cyprus and yet you don't recognise TRNC!
AND IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT:
Your goverment of RoC have a big list in hand they'll ask from Turkey in it's EU accession path. Well the list may consist 100's or 1000's of items, but they have not managed to pass item no1 yet, after 5 years... Let alone recognising RoC it have not opened a single port to Greek Cypriots.
Your leaders are in denial. Papadapuloses vision just did not work. It even backfired as in case of Immovable Property Commitee of Turkish Cypriots!
SORRY BUT IT IS THAT SIMPLE.
Papadapuloses plan might have been complicated, as was the Akritas plan. But the realities are so simple. A minor hickup in the plan makes it useless.
You guys are still at item no 1 and are starting to PANIC. You have yet again miscalculated Turkey's, EU's and ECHR actions.
You guys blame foreign powers and still trust them as they appear to side with you. Germans and French will never allow Turkey in the EU and Turkey knows this, so forget about your list, it's worthless.
Stop blaming outsiders from intervening, then calling them to intervene. I think Alex Downer said exactly the same thing to Crhisto. Which do you want? Intervene or NOT to intervene?
Ans:
-If pressure is to be applied to Turkey/Turkish Cypriots. INTERVENE
-If pressure is to be applied to Greek Cypriots. DON'T INTERVENE
You are just a BIG joke.
Fred from Lurucina comments:
During Talat's reign the TCs came very close to being self sufficient. All they needed was a bit of imagination from Muhtar X to help the TRNC economy and we would have released the shackles of economic dependence on Turkey. But unfortunately none was found and we end up with two anti-solutionists yet again.
Shame on you Muhtar-X and Shame on Akel for standing by and letting yet another opportunity go by.
The cost of isolation to Turkish Cypriots is nothing compared to the cost of transport ban on roc over Turkey. What do we expect when the lunatics have taken over the asylum. Logic is the first casualty.

Marcus comments:
Sorry Hasan Has from Girne (Fri, July 30th 2010 at 13:24 ), it is not that simple. Turkey is responsible for the occupation of the North and the payment of compensation accordingly. The opening of ports etc is only going to recongnise the illegal selfstyled TRNC regime and legitimise Turkey's stranglehold on the area.
From the point of view of the EU, the UN and the legitimitate government of all of Cyprus if necessary the statud quo must remain for another 36 years.
Bretwalda comments:
Emir - that was brilliant. You should use the same points in almost every article that is written in this organ.
Hasan Has from Girne comments:
THIS IS ACTUALLY GOOD that Marcoullis complains to EU because of few days distruption.
Those in the EU will see better what Turkish Cypriots mean by isolation. Another indication why direct trade is need with the Turkish Cypriots, which they have been denied for decades.
EU will realise once more how important it is to allow Direct Trade with Turkish Cypriots and opening up ports in the north.
It will resolve MANY problems issues giving the EU a headache:
1- Turkish Cypriot's economy will start to become independent from Turkey
2- Turkey's ports will open to Greek Cypriots
3- Will help bring solution on the island REALISTICLY closer.
However I can see why French and Germans would not like this since they don't want Turkey in the EU. They prefer to keep Turkey's problems alive not to resolve them. And admit it Greek Cypriots don't really want Turkey in either, not even it gave EVERYTHING GCs ask for. AND TURKEY KNOWS THIS VERY WELL.
Opening up the ports on both sides also will mean headache for many Greek Cypriot leaders as they'll loose the opportunity to use EU accession to try to get what they want from Turkish side and at the same time keep Turkey out of EU. They may also change the perception that "NON-SOLUTION, or status-quo is better option for Greek Cypriot side."
