New marina in the north highlights delays in the south
Topic tags
CyprusTHE pending completion of a new marina in the north of Cyprus has again highlighted the delays in the south of tapping into the nautical tourism market.
Karpaz Gate Marina, located in the Karpas peninsula, is due to be finished on schedule in the spring of 2011.
According to a report in the latest edition of the Karpaz Times, the under-construction marina will boast some 300 berths and have access to an expansive 18,000sqm dry dock for refit and repairs to aid with both maintenance and storage. Another enhancement is a 300 tonne crane.
Touted as “a first class tourist destination,” the marina’s first stage of development includes two 5 star deluxe hotels, a commercial promenade with shops, restaurants and bars At a later stage the site development will continue with a Holiday Village comprising of an additional self-catering hotel and bungalows.
Other services on offer include Wi-Fi bars, car hire, travel; services, a cinema and chandlery, state-of-the-art security cameras. A casino is also on the cards by the end of 2012. There will be enough space for super yachts to manoeuvre, and the marina will avail of facilities such as battery, sewage and oil disposal, as well as fuel.
The north currently has another smaller facility, the Delta Marina in Kyrenia harbour.
In the south, progress has been far slower, but finally there’s been some movement on the radar screen.
Construction of the new marina in Limassol is set to get underway this month. During a presentation to Cyprus Tourism Organisation last week, the joint venture said the project should be ready in two years’ time.
But that ETA sounds “too optimistic,” said Glafkos Kariolou, an aquatic tourism expert with the CTO.
In all likelihood, it would take two years only for the actual construction, he added.
The official plans for the €300 million complex include 586 berths for craft of various sizes, restaurants, cafes, shops and conference space. More controversially, the plans also include 280 villas – some 160 of which will have their own private moorings – as well as luxury apartments.
Meanwhile two more marinas are in the pipeline, one in Paphos the other in Ayia Napa, as well as an expansion to the existing – and congested – Larnaca marina.
To get some perspective on how much time has been wasted, Kariolou said, one needs only to recall that a Cabinet decision to promote nautical tourism was taken 16 years ago –March 2, 1994.
Kariolou said that at the moment there was no competition with the north or with mainland Turkey, quite simply because the south of Cyprus has no marinas anyway.
“In the yachting market, competition is all about quality, not quantity. We’ll have no problem filling up our berths here once our marinas open. Demand far outstrips supply. There are approximately 6.5 million craft seeking shelter in the Mediterranean, compared to 1.5 million berths. The big question is getting the elite customers.”
One thing about the new Limassol marina is that its operators are Camper & Nicholsons International, a global leader in luxury yachting activities.

car rental cyprus makes sense if you want to see more of this beautiful Mediterranean island at your own pace. Cyprus Travel Tours are fine, but if you want freedom please hire Cyprus is definitely the way forward. If you plan ahead and get your car from the airport to make an immediate saving on the cost of transport from there on cheap

Woohoo! 'Reality from Nicosia' you had a blast there and very amusing it was too, LMAO!
Hope you feel better after that, I usually do.
The sad part is that most of what you say has a ring of truth.
Most of the Goverment ministers and senior officials in Cyprus wouldn't be good enough to be village councillors in most other European countries. (Greece excepted)
They 'head up' (or F**k up more like) organisations and departments they haven't got a clue about. They're only interested in how much money, pension, backhanders and favours they can obtain in as short a time as possible, for as little work as possible.
That's why everything takes so long to achieve in Cyprus because no one is actually doing anything about anything except checking their bank balances and share portfolios and picking fluff out of their navels.
Until the brotherhood is broken up and Cyprus becomes a truly international and fair society nothing will change. It will remain jobs for the GC boys and the country can go to the dogs as long as they're ok.
Privatisation of the key SGO's and more competition in the Utilities and Banking sectors is a good place to start.
Don't hold your breath.

when will the gc wake up and realise the only enemy their country has is its own goverment and ministers and also realise you are not going to get your land back [or the turks] if it is ever settled [which i very much doubt] it will be sorted by financial pay out nothing else. there a recession, cyprus south is loosing tourist hand over fist the so called government does sweet fa, it dont invest in cyprus, does not allow casinos, does nothing about corruption lets the police and immigration officers do what they want, come to think of it they let all public workers do what they want, which we all know to be nothing. the builders and corrupt lawyers, solicitors and the idiots at the land registry nobody does anything about all this. over 130thousand people without title deeds, no one does anything about this. all you go on about is the north or should we call it southern turkey, forget it, there will be no solution, the gc government does not want one, when will you gc wake up and realise this, everyone else has. do the turks know some thing you gcs dont? new marina, new 5 star hotels, casinos and lots more, you gc cant even manage to clean a beach or keep a poxy aquarium open in the god forsaken land called pafos, when will you lot wake up. heres a good one for you, a month or so ago one of your brilliant ministers from the cto said we should market cyprus as a winter detination, well slap my thigh and call me stavros, who would ever have thought of that, da. again you gc do nothing, just blame every one else for every thing, for gods sake look at your own government first. some one keeps going on about east european staff etc, i must admit i will only go to a reataurant thats not owned or staffed by cypriots, unless they were born abroad or lived abroad most of their lives and come back. even the hotels, the ones staffed with none cypriots are alot better, efficient, friedlier etc than the ones with cypriots.buissness friends of mine both cypriot and none cypriot wont employ cypriots because they are lazy, untrustworthy and when they have worked for six months, usually during the winter, they leave work go on the dole so they can go to the beach during the day, clubs at night and just sexually harrass the female tourists. this island has got so much to offer it should be the paris of the middle east but its just wasted on the cypriots.

John Alexander,
You are back!!!
You still have not informed us where you got the evdence that Mr Eroglu is a terrorist. Where did you read it? Who wrote it and when? You must show evidence before you go accusing people of being terrorists in a news paper.
You would have read recently in Cyprus Mail that Mr Eroglu and his family all hold RoC passports. That means he can sue you and Cyprus Mail in a Cypriot court for libel for millions of euros, get a decision, come to London to have it recognised and force the sale of your fish and chip shop in Camden Town to pay for the case!!! The revenge of the ORAMS !!!!!! Sleep tight !!!

there has been a landmark judgement in brussels today 05/03/2010 the echr will not hear any more property claims from greek cyproits untill the go through the ipc route with turkey is this the first step in the europeans getting fed up with the petty greek cypriots and starting to reconise the trnc.

I hope mr Alexander you will be in touch with the Israeli Embassy as word has it its an Israeli company Venture..
Jon from UK comments:
Yep, that's the way it goes. Firstly you steal someone else's land with the force of weapons. Then you claim it as yours and start building on it. Then you blame the person you stole the land from for being a fascist and then you want the rest of the world to recognise your theft...
Maybe this thinking actually works in Turkey...afterall this is how Turkey expanded throughout the centuries...however in the rest of the world this is considered to be a crime.
John Alexander from London comments:
Surely, the point of this story isn't delays in building marinas in the free areas of the island; but that the occupation regime is continuing its expropriation and exploitation of Greek Cypriot land and ignoring the laws and procedures of the only legal authority on the island – the Republic of Cyprus. I hope those dispossessed by this new 'Karpaz Gate Marina' will seek legal redress – like Meletios Apostolides – against those who built it and will use it.

HA HA
