Church to blame for nationalism
Sir,
I agree 100 per cent with what Nicholas Papas said in his letter about the Cyprus problem last week (‘Settle this foolish dispute’).
I feel exactly the same way, I would also like to add that it is not only the political base that doesn’t help matters, but also the Greek Orthodox church; this is proved by the way there is a flag of Greece outside most Greek Orthodox churches and some schools. I don’t think it is very Christian to promote nationalism. What exactly are they trying to prove or achieve by doing this?
Also what kind of impression do you think it gives to visitors to the Island?
Don’t forget there are nations such as Romania and Russia which are predominantly Christian Orthodox but they don’t feel the need to have the flag of Greece outside their churches.
Also I feel insulted – it’s as if to say we Cypriots are some how inferior, irrelevant or not even a nation.
I’ve no problems with Greek Orthodoxy the religion, since I am a Greek Orthodox myself and agree with most of what they preach. Had there been a flag with an emblem on it representing Eastern Christian Orthodoxy the religion instead of the political flag of Greece, I would have no problem with this whatsoever.
I would like to point out that I am not anti-Greek, that I support and love the Greek nation, but I also believe in what is right is right.
One last point, Turkish Cypriots are also wrong if they use Turkish flag outside their mosques and schools.
