What’s wrong with us flying the Greek flag?

Sir,

In reference to Gavin Jones' letter "Time to dump our schizophrenic nationalism", I would like to congratulate to Anorthosis supporters for going over to Piraeus with Greek flags and knocking out Olympiakos on aggregate. Just for the record, a certain section of Olympiakos supporters not only stoned and hurled abuse at the team bus that Anorthosis players were travelling on, they then went one better by throwing chairs and objects at travelling supporters.

Anorthosis supporters knew well in advance that they were going to be labelled "Turks" by these small minded uneducated louts and that is why they took Greek flags along to show them that they are Greek Cypriots and not Turks. Olympiakos should be embarrassed and should apologise to Anorthosis as they showed no respect or good manners.

As for the Greek flags being used and not the official flag of Cyprus, the same can be said about the Union Jack. The Scots and Welsh still display their own flags, even though they are all called British. The current Cypriot flag was designed by a Turkish Cypriot in 1960, yet the Turkish Cypriots use the star and crescent, so why can’t the Greek Cypriots use Greek flags? Perhaps it is time for the Greek Cypriots to form a new blue and white flag until Cyprus is truly united.
