Agricola Masi part II

More great wines from established winery

Wine, quality, culture and art. These could be the four elements which connect the activity of Masi Winery. The dynamic winery owns vineyards – beside those in the classic areas of Veneto and Valpolicella - in Friulli, Venezia Giulia, in Tuscany and in Argentina. So, more wines.

2001 Masi Brolo di Campofiorin, Super Venetian, abv 14%

A Corvina and Rondinella grapes combo with deep and intense ruby red colour. This is a longer-aged single vineyard version (“brolo” is what the French would call a “clos”, a vineyard enclosed by a stone wall) of Campofiorin. Deep, almost coffee-grounds aromas; round and soft on the palate; young and full or red fruits, medium-body but already complex. Notably with sweet tannins, long finish with an aftertaste of raisined fruit alcohol. A very good wine for your salami and prosciutto at €21.35.

2001 Masi Serego Alighieri Valpolicella Anniversario abv 14%

The wine shows an intense ruby red colour. The nose reveals clean, pleasing refined and elegant aromas which start with hints of blackberry, black cherry and plum followed by aromas of violet, blueberry, vanilla, licorice, tobacco, cocoa, mace and pink pepper. The mouth has good correspondence to the nose, a tannic attack, balanced by alcohol, full-bodied intense flavours - agreeable. The finish is persistent with flavours of blackberry, black cherry and plum. A well made wine. This Valpolicella ages for 18 months in oak casks and six months in cherry wood casks followed by at least six months ageing in the bottle. Roasted meat or broiled meat and barbecue, braised and stewed meat. €25.46

2006 Masi, Tupungato, Passo Doble, Mendoza, Argentina abv 13.5%

The double fermentation of Malbec grapes with a percentage of lightly dried Corvina grapes gives this wine a rich aroma and good structure. Deep ruby in colour, immediately upon uncorking our noses were treated to a powerful but very pleasant whiff of blueberries and chocolate. It mellows down to black cherry and spicy oak showing through the fruit. Elegant tannins and softness combine to produce a superior wine, medium bodied, with long ageing potential. Passo Doble is ideal with a range of foods particularly red meats game and strongly flavoured cheese. The wine goes with pasta, meat, grill, heavy menus and aged cheeses. €11.40

2004 Masi, Corbec, La Arbolenda, Argentina abv 14.5%

>From La Arbolenda vineyard in Tupungato Valley, this is a blend of Corvina and Malbec, using the traditional Veronese appeasement technique. The wine has a very deep red colour, with light garnet reflections on the rim. The intense perfume of ripe red fruit and jam is lifted by an elegant note of spicy anise. The drying process enriches the wine with prunes and date aromas. On the palate there is a great balance between body weight and acidity plus smooth and elegant tannins. Best with strong flavoured dishes like gilled game or mature cheese. €29.90

2006 Masi Rosato abv 12%

A blended ros? from Raboso and Refosco grapes, with a brilliant pink colour and some purple reflections. The bouquet offers intense aromas of strawberry and raspberry and is softened by a scent of banana. On the palate it shows the fresh acidity of unripe cherries, berry fruit selection, apple and lemon. The wine has a good body with a delicate and persistent finish. It is excellent as an aperitif or with soups or antipasti such as light pasta dishes and seafood as well as risotto. €7.65

2006 Masi Masianco Super Venetian abv 13%

A blend of Pinot Grigio and Verduzzo grapes, this straw-yellow wine with gold tinge has pleasantly sweet aromas of fully ripe apricot and tropical fruits. Some hints of cinnamon and brown sugar. Rich and grapey palate with tangerine and almond flavours, medium-body and a hint of sweetness but harmonious acids keep it fresh and lively. The rich mouth feel and persistent finish show noteworthy freshness and prove that this unique blend is a successful one. This remarkable white is excellent with hors d’ oeuvres, fish and grilled white meats.

2004 Serego Alighieri Bello Ovile, Tuscany, abv 13%

On the hills of Cinigiano the Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Cillegiolo grapes gave birth to this wine. The wine has a deep ruby red colour with purple reflections with a nose of red berry fruit and licorice. Rich, complex and intense on the palate, there is an elegant balance between tannins and alcohol feeling, robust and soft. €14.50

2003 Masi “Costasera” Amarone abv 15%

A complex, dark garnet red, full bodied and well balanced wine with full flavours that include red berries, dark cherries and dry fruits, chocolate and plums with some added earth and underbrush. This wine leaves a tantalising hint of bitterness on the palate. Still young, this blend of Corvina and Molinara grapes will reach its peak in 10 years. €36.70
