One remand from 32 arrests
TWO people were yesterday still being treated in hospital for injuries sustained during violent incidents in Limassol and Nicosia following the Coca-Cola Cup final, which saw AC Omonia beat champions AEL on Wednesday night.The mayhem resulted in 32 arrests, but only one was remanded for 24 hours. Ten of those arrested were charged in writing and released on the same night, while the other 21 – 16 in Limassol and five in Nicosia – were released after the district courts ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to support a remand... 9 comments
Football fans’ cars parked on highway
The police last night remained true to their word and booked football fans who illegally parked on the GSP Stadium's roundabout, to attend the Coca Cola Cup final between champions AEL Limassol and AC Omonia.The last time a big match was played there - between APOEL FC and Real Madrid to qualify for the Champions League semi-finals in March - hundreds of cars parked along the length of the highway, even creating two lines of parked cars around the GSP roundabout. LIMASSOL town was buzzing throughout the weekend, after its local football club AEL became league champions for the first time in 44 years.The streets were alight with flares, people were hanging out of moving cars waving flags and jubilant fans were shouting chants and singing songs – but sadly it didn’t end there, with countless incidents of vandalism and a lack of police presence reported.AEL beat Anorthosis Famagusta on Saturday, which coupled with APOEL’s defeat to AC Omonia, made the Limassol team’s championship victory a mathematical certainty. AEL end their 43-year wait for championship title
Luciano Bebe’s goal 15 minutes from time helped AEL beat Anorthosis 1-0, capturing the national championship title after a 43-year-long drought at the Tsirion Stadium in Limassol on Saturday.Anorthosis started the game brightly, with experienced striker Yiannis Okkas missing two quality chances early on. The home side responded by hitting the bar and the post in the same minute, when first Gilberto’s powerful strike from the distance hit the bar in 18th minute and then Chris Dickson hit Matus Kozacik’s post after a placed shot from inside the area. CFA dishes out series of fines
NICOSIA rival football teams AC Omonia and APOEL have been penalised by the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) for violent clashes between thier respective fans last month.Omonia’s punishment is to play two matches behind closed doors and APOEL’s one, plus undisclosed fines.The charges included, among others, violence, transportation of dangerous objects to the stadium and offensive chanting.“The CSA’s judicial committee imposed the penalty of two games behind closed doors for Omonia, for complaints made involving a game with APOEL on March 23,” the association announced... 1 comment
Arrests after Limassol football violence
TWO teenagers and a 26-year-old man have been arrested in connection with violent clashes that took place after Limassol football rivals Apollon and AEL met on Sunday.According to a police spokesman, the violence started well before kick-off. Two 16-year-old boys were arrested after being spotted on CCTV hurling two red cylinders at Apollon fans.As they then attempted to enter the Tsirion Stadium, they were stopped by police and searched. They confessed to possessing firecrackers and throwing them at Apollon fans.
