Tequila Mexican Garden is one of those wonderful little restaurants that deserves to be packed each night, but is usually just half full.

It is understandable, as it faces tough competition from the fantastic Los Bandidos, which is renowned as one of the very best restaurants in Cyprus – but don’t let that put you off this place.

Even though there have been some poor online reviews about the service here, I found the whole evening to be very pleasant, the waiters were attentive, the food delivered in timely manner and the décor and cleanliness of the restaurant were impressive.

Most importantly, the food hit the mark, with a wide and varied menu ranging from Mexican specialties to steaks, fish and grills.

It’s no surprise to report that the beef fajitas were excellent. Tender, marinated bits of steak with a seared, char broiled flavour that was just outstanding.

The range of fajitas is also impressive, you can choose from chicken, pork, beef, prawn and even salmon (it has a fabulous smokiness and goes well with guacamole).

The prawn fajita arrives sizzling and crackling with onions, bell peppers and mushrooms. The flavours are pristine – and all priced between €14.50 and €17.50.

And the cheese enchiladas are also a treat. The ranchero sauce is savoury, and the enchiladas are tender and redolent with a mild queso.

Carne Asada at €19.95, is a dish for those with a healthy appetite; you’ll get a delicious thick cut fillet steak served on a bed of onions, with side servings of mushrooms, chips and salad (try it with a dash of sour cream – you’ll be surprised at how well it blends with the other spices).

Other specialties include baby back ribs, Mexican burger and Fiesta pork.

My only complaint about this restaurant is the lack of parking. I practically wore out a pair of trainers trekking from my distant parking place at the other end of Nissi Avenue.

Prices are reasonable, but not cheap. You’re looking at about €20 per head, with local wines and beers marked at the usual local prices.
