“My portraits are more about me than about the people I photograph…”
In this video we take a look at the legacy of American fashion and portrait photographer Richard Avedon.
Working for media giants like Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, Avedon became famous for capturing movement in still images of figures from fashion, theatre and dance. Known for embracing flaws and revealing truth in his subjects, his images remain both provocative and deeply compelling.
After he passed away in 2004 of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 81 – while on assignment for The New Yorker – Avedon’s obituary in The New York Times noted: “his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America’s image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century”.
