In this video, we pay a pre-Covid visit to Serbia’s capital, Belgrade.
One of Europe’s oldest continuously-inhabited cities, Belgrade – which translates to ‘White City’ – is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, and the crossroads of the Pannonian Plain and the Balkan Peninsula.
The city’s old-world culture is an acknowledgement of both its communist-era Yugoslavia past, and its new-world, EU aspirations, with socialist modernist monoliths vying for space with art nouveau masterpieces, and Habsburg rule structures rubbing shoulders with relics from Ottoman times.
Highlights of Belgrade that should be on any itinerary, include:
- Belgrade Fortress ambling: clambering or going underground at Belgrade’s fascinating fortress
- Museum of Yugoslavia: getting a nostalgic look at history, art and everyday Yugoslavian life
- Mt. Avala: admiring Belgrade and beyond from the viewing platform of the tallest tower in the Balkans
- Skadarlija: dining out in ‘kafane’ (taverns) serenaded by violins – bohemian Belgrade at its most charming
- Savamala: hanging out at KC Grad, the unofficial capital of Savamala (a Belgrade neighborhood) for exhibitions, gigs and gatherings
- Tram 2: absorbing centuries of history on a Yugoslavian-era tram ride through Belgrade’s Old Town
