In this video, we pay a pre-Covid visit to Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, situated on the River Clyde, which comes packed with sightseeing in its own right, while offering a great base from which to explore the Clyde valley and coast.
Here, visitors will be impressed by the historic architecture dating from the 18th and 19th century, contrasting with the city’s more modern skyline. Some of the best-financed and most imaginative museums and galleries in Britain are found here, among them the showcase Burrell Collection and palatial Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Most distinctive of all is the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose Art Nouveau designs appear all over the city, culminating in the stunning School of Art.
Then there’s the development of the old shipyards of the Clyde, notably in the space-age shapes of the Glasgow Science Centre and the dynamic new Riverside Museum, combining design flair with innovation.
Glasgow’s hospitality and recreation offerings are equally outstanding. Pubs provide friendly opportunities to engage in ‘blethers’ or chats with locals, while eateries, theatres, concert halls and opera house spoil you for culture. The city’s live music scene gets thumbs up, too: here, big bands play at iconic venues, while lower-key pubs often offer regular gigs, too.
Should you find yourself here, highlights to add to the itinerary, include:
- Glasgow Cathedral
- Riverside Museum
- Mackintosh House
- Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum
- Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre
- Glasgow Science Centre
- Glasgow School of Art
- City Chambers
- The Clyde Walkway
