Parliament donated a total of €6,500 to Nicosia’s Makarios Children’s Hospital on Thursday destined for the purchase of a high-tech cardiotocograph, an instrument used to monitor the foetal heartbeat and the uterine contractions during pregnancy and labour.

House President Annita Demetriou, who visited the hospital on Thursday, assured the staff that she was always available “to discuss, examine and legislate on issues related to the effective provision of quality health services.”

Demetriou was welcomed by members of the hospital’s board of directors, management and staff members, as well as a choir of children, who sang carols upon her arrival.

“Especially throughout these days our thoughts are with the children and mothers who are going through issues,” she said.

“The least we can do is to acknowledge the difficulties they are going through. We wish them all the best. I want to thank the staff and management of the hospital, who always perform their work with the fullest dedication.”

Moreover, she said there are ongoing plans and discussions within the House regarding the creation of an emergency unit at Makarios Hospital.
