A 37-year-old man in the district of Paphos was referred to direct trial before the criminal court, in relation to an incident involving injury of a police officer on duty.

According to the police statement, the 37-year-old, who is accused of hitting a police officer with his car while the officer was on duty in ​​Tsada village, appeared before the Paphos district court yesterday, which ordered his referral to the criminal court on May 18.

The 37-year-old will remain in custody until Monday, the date on which the court will decide whether he will continue to be detained until the date of his referral.

The officer who was at a static checkpoint signalled to the 37-year-old to stop his car. Initially, the 37-year-old stopped, but when the officer approached him asking him to get out of the vehicle for inspection, he did not comply and started the vehicle, dragging and injuring the police officer.

The 37-year-old escaped but was later arrested. The policeman was transferred to the A&E department of the Paphos general hospital where he was kept for treatment.
