A pro-Russia rally held in Limassol on Saturday drew ire and sarcasm from Twitter users.
In a short video-clip posted on Twitter by one user, it shows people close to the beach spread out holding a long Russian flag, while others proudly hold up smaller Russian flags, while another man holding the flags of Cyprus and Russia stands behind a microphone and addresses the crowd.
“I’m confused about one thing. Why do they love Russia so passionately from afar? Why do they suffer away from it?” mused Ukrainian Twitter user Anton Gerashchenko, whose post garnered over 1,000 comments and retweets, with over 6,000 users liking his sarcastic dig at the rally shown in the video.
According to Gerashchenko’s post, the group were Russians and they were holding a 53-metre long Russian flag in V and Z shapes, although this was hard to determine from watching the short clip.
Meanwhile, the Twitter account GazetaRu posted a photo of the group of about 45 men and women and a couple of children posing for a group picture holding their flags in the air.
One Twitter user translated GazetaRu’s post, suggesting that the people in the photo are Limassol residents and noted that another event in support of Russia is scheduled for Monday in Larnaca.
“(translation) An action in honour of the flag of Russia was held in Cyprus. Residents of Limassol stretched a 53-metre tricolour, as well as put the letters Z and V out of it. And Larnaca will host a festive car rally the day after tomorrow.”
