A series of fun artistic workshops are taking place this July in downtown Nicosia, inviting participants of all ages and backgrounds to get to know Cyprus’ arts and craftsmanship. The programme is organised by Nicosia HUB-IN, following the huge success of its Heritage Walks that attracted about 1,000 participants from April to June. This month, the organisation is collaborating with local artists to bring cultural and crafty experiences to visitors and introduce them to the creative industry of the city within the walls.

Five workshops are planned within July and one has already taken place. The next workshop, on Wednesday, invites adults to explore the art of engraving as an autonomous form of visual creation. Held at the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, Cypriot artists Eyklides Papadopoulos and Despina Pringi will guide participants into creating their work using the linotype technique. This workshop will be repeated on July 24 as well.

The Laser-cut assembly lamps – From design to fabrication workshop on Thursday with Camila Calegari Margues will use the the laser-cut technique to show participants the design and production of table lamps through digital fabrication. The workshop aims to raise awareness about the island’s fading and revive the Fythkiotika textile patterns through a contemporary product. This session is again addressed to adults, running from 10am to 3pm at CYENS Thinker Makerspace.

A kids’ workshop will follow at CYENS, by Irini Klokkari taking children back to the 19th century, when head and waist scarves were an ordinary fashionable piece for both men and women. Guided, the children will get a hands-on experience of creating these scarves, by making their own bandana stamped with traditional patterns in various shapes and colours. Ages 7 to 12 are able to join Saturday’s workshop Traditional Patterns – Stamped Bandanas, held between 10am and 1pm.

On July 25, three artists (Georgia Petroudi, Giorgos Christophi and Eva Stavrou) will bring together music and visual arts through live performance, projections and digital applications at CYENS as a way for participants to experience the intersection between sound and image. This will be an afternoon workshop for adults, (titled Sounds of Nicosia – An interaction between music and visual arts) starting at 5.30pm.

All of the workshops are free yet places are limited so those interested in taking part are encouraged to book their spots. Registrations, more information and original sources are available here.

The series of Creative Workshops is funded by the European project HUB-IN (Hubs of Innovation and Entrepreneurship for the Transformation of Historic Urban Areas) and is co-ordinated by Nicosia Municipality and the Cyprus Energy Agency who represent the Nicosia HUB-IN within the framework of the project. HUB-IN has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 869429
