What’s on this week at the Constantia Summer Movie Marathon
As Nicosia empties out this week with many escaping to cooler corners of the island, those staying put will have the city to themselves. Despite many restaurants, shops and bars closing for their summer break, some events are on to entertain all those in the city. For a bit of summer movie magic, check out the five films from the international and independent cinema world which will be screened at the Constantia Summer Movie Marathon this week.
The week’s first screening is on Wednesday, showing the Italian comedy-drama La Chimera about a British looter who gets involved in an international network of stolen Etruscan artefacts during the 1980s. As with all of the film nights at Constantia open-air theatre, the screening will start at 9pm and will include subtitles in Greek.

Up next, on Thursday is the award-winning Cypriot documentary film Sharing an Island. The documentary follows six young Cypriots who have never met each other before – three Greek Cypriots, who live south of the buffer zone in Cyprus and three Turkish Cypriots, who live north of it – who are invited to share a house for five days. Together they travel across divided Cyprus. They argue from different perspectives of history, share stories of the past and together they envision the future.
On Friday night, the award-winning comedy-drama-romance Fallen Leaves will be screened. The film is set in modern-day Helsinki where two lonely souls in search of love meet by chance in a karaoke bar. However, their path to happiness is beset by obstacles – from lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism and a charming stray dog.
The Greek film Black Stone is next on this week’s screening programme about Haroula, a concerned mother, who bands with her son and a friendly taxi driver to find her other son, a civil servant accused of fraud, whom she hasn’t seen in two days. The film will be screened this Saturday and again on September 8.
Concluding this week’s outdoor cinema nights on Sunday is another Greek film – the acclaimed Murderess. Based on the classic story by Alexandros Papadiamantis, Murderess takes place on a remote island in Greece, circa 1900. There, Hadoula, trapped in her own mother’s rejection, struggles to survive the dictates of a patriarchal society.
