The Gallery 45 will present a new showcase and artist next month in a pop-up exhibition at Baxter Garage, Limassol. Nicosia-based artist Iacovos Loizou will present a new series of colourful artworks under the title Conscious Mapping, opening on October 18 and on view until November 23. Co-curated by Katerina Rebello Savvides and Sanaz Nazemi Agha, the exhibition touches on urban planning and its relationship with artistic expression and particularly street art.
“Conscious Mapping is the visual exploration of an innovative urban planner and artist whose work merges the realms of urban designs and street art,” say organisers. “As a Cypriot researcher, urban planner and visual artist, Loizou operates in hybrid territories of art and urban design, intricately weaving urban planning symbols into his work while exploring themes and forms of expression from the digital age, pop and anime culture. His work depicts strong elements of social commentary and humour. During his art residency placement in Japan in 2023, Loizou became enamoured with vibrant Japanese street art and this influence is deeply woven into his artistic practice as he seeks to create urban environments that reflect cultural richness and community engagement.”
Loizou continues exploring the intersection of urban life and art with the Nicosia NGO OPU Collective of which he is the co-founder as well as within his research work at the Department of Architecture at the University of Cyprus. In October, he takes his artistic practice and urban inspiration to Limassol for a month-long showcase full of colour.
