A 61-year-old man was arrested on Monday in connection with the ongoing investigation into an animal cruelty case in Peyia, Paphos.
According to assistant police director of operations in Paphos, Michalis Nikolaou, the arrest was made to assist with the investigation.
“The 61-year-old suspect has been brought to the Paphos police headquarters for questioning,” Nikolaou confirmed.
This arrest follows the release of a 30-year-old dog owner on Sunday, who had been detained for a day to assist with inquiries. The man was released without charges after a one-day detention order expired.
The investigation began on Friday night when a foreign woman discovered a dog in a rubbish bin in Peyia.
“The dog was wrapped in a dog food bag and was in poor condition,” said lieutenant Charis Charalambous. The woman took the dog to a veterinary clinic in Kissonerga, where it remains in critical condition. She then reported the incident to the police.
Following a microchip scan, police identified the dog’s owner, leading to the initial arrest. However, during further investigation, evidence was found linking a 61-year-old neighbour to the case.
“At the scene, we found empty dog food bags of the same brand that the 61-year-old is known to use for his own dogs,” Charalambous explained.
This discovery prompted the issuance of a second arrest warrant for the 61-year-old, who is now being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
“The investigation is continuing with the aim of fully clarifying the circumstances and holding those responsible accountable,” Charalambous added.
The case has sparked public concern, with many calling for stricter enforcement of animal protection laws in Cyprus.
