Gender equality is a central priority for the government, Defence Minister Vassilis Palmas said on Friday at a reception honouring women serving in the National Guard.
Palmas highlighted the vital role of women in the armed forces, emphasising their ability, dedication and resilience in a demanding environment.
He added that the Ministry aimed to expand opportunities for women in the military. “So that every female military member has equal opportunities, merit-based treatment and the conditions she deserves, so that she can contribute unwaveringly to the homeland”.
Addressing past discrimination against female non-commissioned officers, Palmas assured that the ministry is actively drafting proposals and recommendations to resolve the issue.
In February 2024, government officials signed the “Policy Statement on Gender Equality,” outlining measures to promote equality and prevent gender-based discrimination across all ministries.
In conclusion, Palmas thanked the women for their enduring and invaluable contribution to the National Guard and to society as a whole.
Meanwhile, the cabinet recently approved legislation granting women the right to voluntarily enlist in the National Guard from the age of 18. However, this change is pending approval by the House of representatives. Currently, only female officers and contractual soldiers are permitted to serve in the Cypriot army.
