The local art scene is having a moment as several new exhibitions are opening around the country. In the historical centre of Nicosia, visual artist Christiana Georgiou is preparing to host her second solo exhibition. Titled Worthy of Respect, the exhibition will be held at the multipurpose cultural space Garage from March 8 to 16 with Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos inaugurating the showcase this Saturday.
Throughout the duration of the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to admire Christiana Georgiou’s works, exploring a theme that although is not new, is approached in an original way by the artist.
The exhibition’s subject has been depicted in art since prehistoric times, yet it continues to provoke discussion even today. The focus is on the vulva – the sacred vessel that brings life into the world. Worthy of Respect (Axio Sevasmou) is a title deeply meaningful, as it derives from the ancient Greek word ‘aidoios’.
Through the exhibited artworks, the artist expresses her hope that every woman’s identity will be recognised as worthy of respect and that all societies will grant women the equal position they rightfully deserve.
Beyond paintings, the exhibition includes fabric sculptures, papier-mâché dolls, bags, garments and pashminas, all created through silkscreen printing – crafted with love and dedication to women.
On the opening night, a visual performance dedicated to women will take place, accompanied by music inspired by composer and musicologist Savvas Savva.
