More than 400 trees have been planted in Cape Greco in a bid to green barren fields.
Local species of saplings and shrubs were planted by a group of volunteers, as part of a joint action by Eurobank, Hellenic Bank and the forestry department.
“This action consists of two parts, the first one being the planting and restoration of the area where the garbage dump used to be,” environmental commissioner Antonia Theodosiou said.
Stone walls have also been constructed in the area and local flowers and aromatic plants will be planted to help in the preservation of the landscape.
Ayia Napa mayor Christos Zannettou said that for more than 20 years this area near Cape Greco was a garbage dump.
“Over three and a half thousand trees have been planted, and the municipality’s goal is to continue tree planting in this key area whilst, thousands of tourists visit the sea caves, an important landmark for Ayia Napa,” he said.
