A month of cinema, music and performance

Limassol’s Rialto Theatre is set to deliver a spectacular line-up of events this April, offering a rich blend of film, theatre, dance and music. With events for cinephiles, music enthusiasts or live performances, Rialto’s diverse programme has something to captivate everyone.

Kickstarting the month’s events is, of course, Cyprus’ foremost film event – the 23rd Cyprus Film Days International Festival 2025. Curated by Artistic Directors Argyro Nicolaou and Marios Lizides, the festival once again exudes a profoundly international character, presenting world-acclaimed film premieres (Viewfinder), an international (Glocal Images) and a Cypriot competition section, hands-on workshops and masterclasses, a programme for children and youth, as well as a platform for film industry professionals.

On April 15, the gripping psychological thriller 112 adapted from the award-winning Danish film The Guilty will be presented. This one-man stage adaptation follows a police officer entangled in a murder case after an on-duty shooting. With an immersive, cinema-like experience, audiences become silent witnesses to a tense, character-driven drama.

On the following evening, the popular film Maria depicting an unconventional and cinematic portrayal of opera legend Maria Callas will be screened at Rialto Theatre at 8.30pm. Starring Angelina Jolie in a career-defining role, this film offers a deeply evocative glimpse into the diva’s final days. Having premiered at the Venice Film Festival, Maria is a must-watch for lovers of film and classical music.

The following three performances will focus on the world of music. First is André Rieu’s 75th Birthday Celebration: The Dream Continues – a special cinema concert event screened on April 23. In celebration of the composer’s birthday, he takes audiences on a musical voyage through his hometown of Maastricht and captures Rieu’s childhood dream of leading an orchestra, featuring dazzling global performances with the Johann Strauss Orchestra.

On April 26 another great composer will be honoured. Mozart’s The Magic Flute is a reimagining of Mozart’s beloved opera. The musical fairytale by Carmen Rougeri brings to life the enchanting tale of the King of the Day and the Queen of the Night and is an interactive experience for young audiences, blending storytelling with Mozart’s timeless compositions.

Local talent will then take the stage. Renowned Cyprus artist Elena Solea will present her first solo concert on April 27, presenting songs that have shaped her 30-year journey. Expect moving renditions of works by legendary Greek composers such as Manos Hadjidakis, Dionysis Savvopoulos and Stamatis Kraounakis.

Dance and performative art is part of Rialto’s April agenda as well. On April 29, the month’s programme concludes with Bliss by the Asomates Dynameis Dance Company. Through movement, speech and sound, this thought-provoking dance performance explores the nature of bliss – whether it is an elusive pursuit or a state of being we can cultivate. Featuring six performers, Bliss is a reflective and immersive experience choreographed by Andromachi Dimitriadou Lindahl and supported by the Terpsichore 2025 programme.
