Four men were remanded over the alleged attack against five players of the Paphos volleyball team Paphiakos before Paphos Court on Monday afternoon.

The suspects, two aged 21, a 23-year-old and a 24-year-old, were arrested on Sunday facing charges of unprovoked attack and actual bodily harm.

According to the police, an examination of audiovisual material from closed-circuit surveillance cameras is yet to be conducted and more than 50 witnesses await an interview. A fifth arrest warrant has been issued for another man sought, police said.

Paphos volleyball team Paphiakos on Monday publicly condemned the attack saying the incident had been “brazen, organised and completely unacceptable”.

The players filed a police report stating they were attacked in the street near a nightclub where they had been celebrating their win of the Cyprus Cup in the early hours on Saturday, by perpetrators who later fled the scene.

The five injured players were taken to Paphos general hospital, where three of them were determined to have suffered fractures to their nasal passages, while two had abrasions and bruises on various parts of their bodies.

According to a CyBC report, the perpetrators had asked to take selfies with the Cup trophy which the players had initially agreed to but the situation turned aggressive when the men refused to return the cup to the athletes.
