Marios Hannides announced on Wednesday that he will run for the presidency of Cyprus’ socialist party, Edek, pledging to restore unity and revive the party’s role as a forward-looking force in society.
In a written statement, Hannides said Edek now stands at a critical crossroads, warning that internal division and uncertainty have distanced the party from its roots and long-standing vision.
The present leader Marinos Sizopoulos announced his intention to step down last week.
“The inward-looking mindset and doubt are hurting us,” Hannides said.
“They are pulling us away from what we once stood for.”
His immediate goal, he added, is to create conditions of unity and cooperation that would encourage former members and disappointed supporters to return.
The announcement comes amid growing concern over Edek’s recent performance and internal rifts that have weakened its public image. Hannides did not reference the party’s current leadership directly but made clear that fresh direction is needed.
He framed his candidacy as a chance to rebuild trust and re-establish Edek as a dynamic political voice capable of offering real prospects to Cypriot society.
The party is expected to hold internal elections later this year, though no official date has yet been confirmed.
