It is important to do everything possible to create the conditions leading to a solution of the Cyprus problem, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Friday evening, commenting on a visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the north and his remarks on two states.

“The positions of Mr Erdogan are well known, particularly his public statements. From thereon, what matters for us who are interested in the termination of the occupation and the reunification of our homeland, is to do whatever possible to create the conditions towards a solution of the Cyprus problem, on the basis of the agreed framework,” he said.

The president said that before the Geneva conference, the Turkish side was speaking about an impasse and much more.

“Developments through our work, through our actions, away from the limelight, bring results and this is what we will do because – I reiterate – we, more than anyone else, want the termination of the occupation,” he said.

Regarding the appointment of a UN special envoy for Cyprus, Christodoulides said it was a matter of days for the UN to make an announcement.

“This is the information we have,” he added.

Asked about the protest outside the presidential palace against his trip to Israel, Christodoulides said “we live in a democratic country and everyone can disagree and protest”.
