Larnaca municipality warned on Tuesday that fake QR codes have been placed by scammers on parking meters.
It said this has been going on for a few days.
The fake QR codes, with the inscription ‘scan to pay’, have been stuck on parking meters along Athenon avenue and other car parks with meters.
By scanning the QR codes, the user is transferred to a fake payment platform and falls victim to electronic fraud.
“The only valid way to pay for parking is by inserting coins in the parking machine, which issues a receipt. This receipt should be placed in a prominent position on the dashboard,” Larnaca municipality said.
The fraud has already been reported to the police and people are called on to be particularly cautious and avoid scanning QR codes.
