Inter Milan substitute Davide Frattesi scored a dramatic extra-time winner to send his side into the Champions League final after a breathtaking 4-3 home win over Barcelona on Tuesday, completing a 7-6 aggregate victory in one of the competition’s most unforgettable semi-finals.

The Italian side will now face either Paris St Germain or Arsenal in Munich later this month, while Barcelona, denied their first final in a decade, were left ruing both their own defensive lapses and a series of contentious refereeing calls.

Trailing 3-2 on the night and facing elimination, Inter were rescued by 37-year-old Francesco Acerbi, who blasted home a stoppage-time equaliser to force extra time. Moments later, Frattesi curled in a brilliant winner after a driving run and assist from Marcus Thuram.

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer was also instrumental, making several world-class saves, including two from Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal, who also struck the post.

Barcelona, who had rallied from two goals down to lead late through Raphinha’s 87th-minute strike, were incensed by multiple refereeing decisions made by Polish referee Szymon Marciniak.

Manager Hansi Flick said every 50-50 decision went against his side. Key incidents included a controversial penalty awarded to Inter after a VAR review of Pau Cubarsi’s tackle on Lautaro Martinez, and a reversal of what had initially been a penalty for Barcelona, downgraded to a free kick outside the box.

Barça’s players also claimed a handball by Acerbi and a foul by Denzel Dumfries in the lead-up to Inter’s equaliser were overlooked.

“I’m disappointed, not with my team, but with how things went,” said Flick. “Every 50-50 decision went their way… I’ve told the referee what I think.”

Inter’s incredible victory sends them to a record 11th European final, and possibly toward a fourth title. “Tonight the incredible happened,” said Frattesi, who also netted the decisive goal in the quarter-final win over Bayern Munich.

Barcelona, who had been chasing a treble after winning the Copa del Rey, must now regroup ahead of Sunday’s El Clasico against title-rivals Real Madrid.
