Cyprus’ Green party remains in “constructive opposition”, despite having supported Nikos Christodoulides in the last presidential election, the party’s new president Stavros Papadouris said on Monday.

Papadouris, who was elected to the Green party’s top post last month, met with Christodoulides on Monday to discuss various parliamentary issues, including lower VAT on solar panels, and said a broader meeting with the new leadership of the party would be held at a later date.

Christodoulides briefed Papadouris on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, as the latter will now be representing the Green party at the National Council.

Papadouris did not say when the next National Council meeting would be held and said he had not been informed on when the UN chief’s personal envoy for Cyprus, Maria Ángela Holguín, would be arriving in Cyprus.

In the 2023 presidential elections, the Green party had called its followers to vote at will. Papadouris said he had been bound by the party’s decision and had expressed his preference for Christodoulides just week before the elections.
