A bridge under construction in Kalavasos is too low, making it impossible for fire trucks to use the riverbed beneath to quickly access areas in an emergency.

Fire department spokesman Andreas Kettis confirmed the information on Monday, telling the Cyprus Mail that officers had visited the site more than once, accompanied by MPs and local authorities.

“We went to the site. Some fire engines cannot pass under the bridge,” Kettis said.

“Once this was determined, we contacted the authorities for the situation to be rectified, for something to be done that will be satisfactory.”

The bridge, close to the future energy centre, is approximately 20cm lower than it should be and MPs from the House transport committee are discussing ways to solve the problem.

Disy MP Nikos Sykas told Alpha News that MPs visited the site in the context of a meeting with nine local communities to discuss countermeasures regarding the creation of the energy centre.

Sykas said a dirt track ran under the bridge through a dried-up riverbed.

“The public works planning was to the side of this track, however this was not adequate and the bridge is a few centimetres too low for the fire department or army trucks to pass under,” he explained.

Sykas suggested that the riverbed be used as a road because otherwise it would take a couple of years before the road under the bridge was lowered.

Works on the bridge are projected to be finished by the end of May.
