No patients at Nicosia general hospital are at risk, state health services (Okypy) said on Saturday after concerns were raised by the Green Party.

Responding to photos circulated by the party, Okypy claimed that the images did not reflect the actual condition of the hospital’s storage practices, and insisted that there were no safety hazards regarding equipment.

In an official statement, Okypy claimed that all inactive and unsuitable medical equipment had been safely stored in basement storage or sealed outdoor containers and it was awaiting approval from the House of Representatives for the sale of the equipment as it was state property.

The photos showed haphazard stacking of items that looked as if they would all collapse if touched.

According to Okypy, concerns raised about practices in the oncology outpatient clinics were likewise unfounded, with the units relocated to the hospital’s first floor since November 2024.

Therefore, Okypy claimed, the previously affected area was no longer in use by staff or patients, adding that necessary measures including cleaning, microbiological testing, and pest control had been implemented.

While affirming that “none of the patients under our care are exposed to danger”, Okypy expressed regret over the Greens circulating the announcement without prior consultation.
