Renovation work has been completed at the Panaia Chrysopolitissa church in Kyrenia, the bicommunal technical committee on cultural heritage’s co-chairman Sotos Ktoris said on Monday.

He said the church, which is located near Kyrenia’s old harbour, dates back to Cyprus’ Frankish period, with various renovations having been carried out in the intervening centuries, the most “significant” of which was in 1783.

The renovation project was financed in part by the European Union and in part by people from Kyrenia and implemented under the technical supervision of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Ktoris said the contributions made by people from Kyrenia were “of decisive importance”, and that locals had “with respect and love supported the effort to save an important Kyrenia monument”.
