The UN chief’s personal envoy for Cyprus Maria Angela Holguin kicks off her meetings on the island with a 10.30am appointment with President Nikos Christodoulides on Saturday.
Holguin will be meeting Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar on Monday at 10.30am.
According to diplomatic sources, after her meetings with the leaders of the two communities, Holguin will be talking to the press and announcing her agenda and next steps.
Holguin will be in Cyprus from May 24 to 31 and it is not yet clear if she will be holding a second meeting with each of the leaders, the same sources said.
The visit is part of ongoing efforts to explore prospects for renewed negotiations between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots on the Cyprus issue.
During her stay, Holguin will also be meeting other key figures involved in the Cyprus issue, including the three guarantor powers – Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
The visit comes amid growing international concern over the prolonged stalemate in peace talks and follows Holguín’s previous efforts to assess the ground for restarting dialogue.
Her return signals a continued commitment from the UN to support a negotiated solution to the decades-long division of the island.
